Re: Ancestry (UK) GEDCOM import date format problem

GEDCOM is really a method of last resort, as there is so much variation in how different apps implement it. A much better method that has recently become available is to download your Ancestry tree into the free Essentials version of RootsMagic 8. This talks to Ancestry directly without having to go...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

OK, I paraphrased slightly - it actually says that Local Media Objects are a "feature that although allowed by FH is not well supported as it prefers to use Media Records in most Media dialogues". Either way, I took that as an indication that most FH users won't be familiar with the term so might st...

Re: Newly added child will not sort according to birth date

No point- I’ve already reported the Records Window anomaly and CP aren’t going to fix it (“it’s always been like that and if we changed it users will complain”), so the only other option is to break the Focus Window sort as well!

Re: Newly added child will not sort according to birth date

I noticed one strange inconsistency while playing. I entered three children, born in 1918, on 1 Apr 1920, and after 1920 (I know they were last but don't know the exact date). The Records Window sorts births in the wrong order, putting "After 1920" as earlier than 1 Apr 1920. This is by design, as m...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

IMO, there is limited benefit in tweaking the odd word here or there, as I would make more radical changes. I think some of the language is unnecessarily complex. It takes too long to do a mock-up, but hopefully where I am coming from is clear from a description. I think the area to look at first is...

Re: is there an automatic update of the Sample Project in V7?

It’s the same download for FH7 irrespective of whether you are installing fresh or upgrading, so all users have the same Sample Project. As far as I can tell, it’s not been upgraded to use any of the new FH7 features, which may be a missed opportunity for CP to demonstrate them in action.

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

The plugin is ready to go again. Apart from the "Living" modification noted above, I have also incorporated Mike's suggestion to permit extended characters in file and folder names, and moved Custom ID to the optional facts for export. It is not strictly a Fact in FH, but this makes the export optio...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

Or to put it another way - the UI is in plain English and speaks to the user in terms they understand, and the documentation gives the nitty gritty technical details for those that are interested. The other extreme is a UI that uses precise technical language, but most users need to go to the manual...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

Thanks. As a purely qualitative comment, I generally find UIs and help files easier if they are structured around the outcome I want to achieve (create new files for frame images, copy existing files, etc), rather than the process of how it is achieved (Part Frames via Local Media Objects, etc)...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

Err, where exactly did I say that the plugin was not required...? Quite the opposite, it's a popular and powerful utility that provides valuable extra functionality. I was just expressing mild surprise that it can't write a basic GEDCOM file with external links if that is all that is required (parti...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

I was thinking about the way I migrated to FH in the first place. I always used external media in FTM as well, and it was very easy to set up such that both apps used the same files during the transition. I'm sure I shared media with Gramps as well while working out which app to use. I rarely use fr...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

Of course - plugins are there for cribbing ;). There is a more formal definition of the checksum calculation method in Gedcom L , but the method I use of extracting characters from the hex string is easier to code (IMO of course) and does the same thing. Unhyphenated with checksum is fine for all ve...

Re: Export Gedcom File plugin new features

I haven't had any need to run the Export Gedcom File plugin up until now, but a couple of comments from taking this version for a test drive: The Unique ID field appears to be exported as it stands without converting the format to what the target app expects and supports. Most apps discard the FH ve...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

Sorted - when RM imports a GEDCOM file, it makes up its own mind on whether to set the Living flag or not (it is not a standard GEDCOM item, and RM ignores it for both export and import). Sometimes it is set for individuals with no death date even if they are the parent of somebody who died centurie...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

Mike, that’s not correct. The iup dialogue is unconstrained, so defaults to the last used folder. Deliberate decision not to force an initial default, as any of the default RM folder, the Project Public folder, or indeed any other choice are all equally valid, so I don’t want to impose any particula...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

I've put this in a separate post to avoid confusion. If anybody is currently using the original sync process and plugin, this simple additional plugin updates the Unique ID values in your project from your RM database to enable transition to the new version. Use is explained in the KB page linked ab...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

This updated version of the plugin has a number of significant enhancements over the original, mostly in terms of the user interface and how reports are presented. A new main menu gives much more guidance on how to use the plugin, rather than just simple button options. There is a clearer distinctio...

Re: Prepared Source and Prepared Citation?

the ability to enter details of a source when the source is encountered, rather than creating facts and then adding sources as was the case in FH6. That's a common misconception arising from the way FH7 was promoted. It was perfectly possible to do Source-Driven data entry in FH6, either through AS...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

A couple of minor constraints that I have noted in testing- RM/Ancestry do not have an equivalent of the FH ‘Private’ flag that applies to the whole record, so if Private Individuals are exported they become visible to anybody who can view the tree. Syncing ‘Living’ flags between FH and RM is straig...

Re: FH-RM-Ancestry Sync to exploit hints (update)

Thanks Kevin, that is clear. My recommendation is to wait for the plugin update later this week and modify that. I will need to check that Living flags are read into RM and synced across to Ancestry correctly, but that's easy enough to do. By way of background, plugin scripts are written in a progra...

Re: Plugins planned/in progress

Jackie - it’s the other way around. The fhSQL library (which is the wrapper for the ODBC driver) is used by FH to read and write to databases used by other apps. For example, RM7 and RM8 are both based on SQLite, so FH can read (and write to with some limitations) RM files directly. It’s what I use ...
