Re: Private Messages
FYI - as you've been the victim of abhorrent DM's/PM's on Forums, you are not 'baked in' on this forum - note there is a 'Contact' with speech bubble under your details on your reply - when clicked it opens the PM facility to contact you, so you might want to go to your settings as per the OP and t...

Re: Private Messages
Hi everyone, I'd like to post my 2c worth (Australian dollars) about this and to, perhaps, provide a different perspective. I'm looking at the gender of the OP and those who have replied. I absolutely do not want to start any kind of 'gender war' but, as a female myself, I can attest to receiving al...

Re: Switching census record filing from Head-based to Sheet-based
Tamara; As I'm trying to drop the names in my media titles, it's not actually a question of how I name my files, but more of getting enough info into the media record that I know the person to whom the file pertains. Ah. I'm getting lost in all the information. Have you thought about a note for the...

Re: Switching census record filing from Head-based to Sheet-based
I'm not sure I'm adding anything to this but here's some examples of how I name my census images (I work with folios not people): RG 12_166, Folio 107; 1891 England Census, Islington, London, England This is the same as the title, exchanging / for _: {Dept_Series_Piece_Book}, Folio {Folio}; {Census_...

Re: Essentials Templates Advice
Just here to agree with all of the posts. As for learning the language of templates: it is a challenge to begin with but, once you've got the hang of it, it becomes second nature. Stick with it. The trickiest thing with coding is that it is absolutely literal. Watch out for spaces where you don't wa...

Re: Citing English Census
Another Adrian is joining the conversation. Only this one is less knowledgeable, lives Down Under and may not be as handsome. Greetings, from another Australian :) The short answer is that you'll get a bazillion different versions of how people cite census returns. It's whatever floats your boat in...

Re: Generate an exportable list of Source Templates
Good idea to copy into a separate collection. Thanks for the suggestion! But, no, not importing to a new project, though I may end up creating a new one after cleaning up my templates. Ah! Gotcha. I'd definitely create a custom collection for your source templates. If you're going through stages of...

Re: Generate an exportable list of Source Templates
Why would I like to do this? Because I find it frustrating when adding a new source that the list of templates doesn't appear in update order, so if I have something to refer to outside of FH, I'll know which one to use. I don't dare delete those I'm no longer using as some will still have citation...

Re: FindMyPast: Northaw parish registers
Tamara - for some reason I felt compelled to have a look at the Northaw registers. You may know this already but there appears to have been a serious fire there - the 1769-1812 register is only present on FMP as a transcript because the original was so badly burned. Some of the marriages are from a...

FindMyPast: Northaw parish registers
I am finally in the next few months going to tackle a several decades old brick wall and I need to look at Hertfordshire parish registers (not available on Ancestry). I see that Northaw is available at FindMyPast: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/world-records/full-list-of-united-kingdom-record...

Re: Handling identical source names
I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thank you. It's a great thread and I've gained some useful insights. Thanks for making the post. I tend to refer to the login page when the site requires one. If I don't, I'll usually get sent there anyway. I try to use free sites and the GRO Index part is free,...

Re: Handling identical source names
Tamara; No problem. We all attack things a bit differently. Perhaps I'll switch to a method like yours once I'm up and running and know my way around FH7 a bit better. My citations are starting to come together, as I continue to develop my templates and play with how I want things to be sorted and/...

Re: Handling identical source names
Tamara; I don't believe that I ever said that a Bibliography is a requirement. In fact; many people don't use them. However; I do keep a bibliography, just as a convenient list of places where I found certain types of information. It's easier than wading through hundreds of footnotes. My bibliograp...

Re: Handling identical source names
bibliography sort in a meaningful way. Shoot me down in flames but I don't see the need for a (FH7 constructed) bibliography. I'm preparing my research for submission to my local genealogical society and I have no intention of including one. I'm crafting publications in FH7 and each individual's pa...

I too have a system all my own, one I've been told on a Facebook forum is "wrong", but I am happy with it and that's all that matters' Teresa - also a citation nerd Ugh! They obviously never met my quirky but adorable Medieval History professor who had his own citation system and insisted...

Re: Handling identical source names
Tamara; I, too, like having proper footnotes. That is why I'm spending the time to create my own variant that brings them back again. Thank you for the examples. My pleasure! I must admit that I find crafting the perfect source template for my own personal use is as satisfying as the research itsel...

Re: Handling identical source names
"t4ms"; I've been playing with some newspaper article, newspaper BMD announcement and obit, and online obit citation templates. It's taken a while, but I've come up with citation and title formats that seem to work. The big issue has been that the Strathclyde system was designed to elimin...

Re: Handling identical source names
Helen and Mark; I'm trying to determine a more-or-less standard approach to forming titles that aren't likely to cause collisions. I sometimes have two copies of an image, because some of the info in one is a bit more clear than on the other. As "t4ms" notes, adding the collection and rep...

Yep, I've stopped using them with the exception of if a digital image I have of a parish register is a transcript. That's handy for potential transcription errors.

Re: Should I just give up using the "EE" Templates
I don't have anything new to add but I'd like to join the chorus of EE is hideous and really grinds my gears. I've created my own templates loosely based on Footnoting (Chicago) which works for me and I'm sharing them with my local genealogical society. But I'm doing that because I'm a citation nerd...

Re: Recognise DD-MMM-YYYY as date
I assume you've checked whether Genealogy SA can display dates in a different format; it's a pity they haven't used the date format preferred by Gedcom but wishes aren't horses, so beggars can't ride. I wonder what other data sources have the same issue. As an aside, I've just checked with my old P...
