Re: Export to Mac Family Tree — note for geocoding
I notice that you did alter the Rich Text Formatting to use HTML 5 format . Was that deliberate and did it give the best rendering of Rich Text Notes compared to the other options? You also ticked Use the JPG file format for all images . Was that necessary to get all images displayed? As I said, al...

Re: Export to Mac Family Tree — note for geocoding
I didn't do a lot of tweaking as all I wanted was the geocoding. I just use the iPad version when I go to a records office. This is how I have it set:

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
I'll leave it here -- you might pick up some support when the board is busier. Is there something out of the ordinary about your image? I'd be happy to try shrinking it. Thanks for the offer, thanks to the next poster I now learn the file format was the problem. I'm off to make a cup of tea and tak...

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
When you shrink your chosen image, what format are you saving it as? It should be jpg and I note that the avatar you have set up is a png. Attach the image to a post and I'll try converting it to an acceptable size for you. I've no idea where the avatar came from, thanks though for the note on imag...

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
It's entirely obvious I'm not convincing anybody, and every comment so far has been in defence of the status quo, so I will stop trying to suggest what seemed to be a trivial update behind the scenes and go back to lurking.

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
I don't have to make an avatar for anything else, just picked a small colour image and unable to get it to shrink to the intended file size.ColeValleyGirl wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024 16:15
My icon (which I use in a lot of places) is just over 3k and does the job nicely. Your intended icon must be pretty special.

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
FYI: We have over 7,000 members on record. At 6k per avatar, that's 42 Megabytes of storage — increasing to 20k (something I find people debating on forums ten years ago) would up that to a huge (I'm being sarcastic) 140 Mb, which is still peanuts by any measure. I feel like I'm trying to flog a de...

I'm not railing about the 100x100, more the file sizeColeValleyGirl wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024 16:17 Plus 100 x 100 fits in nicely with our theme and doesn't impact performance overly for those of our members who don't have fast Internet.

Re: Trivial question on forum avatar size
Really? How much does this storage cost that increasing the size of a few 100 avatars from 6k to something more contemporary breaks the bank?! I'm astonished, given how little storage actually costs!!!!

Trivial question on forum avatar size
Apologies for the triviality of this, but why are forum avatars so tiny? It's 2024, 100x100 at 6kB seems a little antiquated! I thought I'd actually set mine up, tried to upload and have spent 15 minutes failing to scale an image small enough! Not exactly important, but as I understand it the forum ...

I also tend to use AS for RGO BMD as it hadn't occurred to me not to! While it's overkill, it makes me work in a consistent way and keeps me on one screen for most of my data entry. I don't make much use of templates, though.

Export to Mac Family Tree — note for geocoding
Just in case someone else tries this, I used the Export Gedcom Plugin to make a file for Mac Family Tree. It (so far) seems to have worked, but I did need to tweak the format option to make the Places get the geocoding information — the choice (which I concluded from the help file / other posts here...

Not quite the same, but Parallels Intel Win 10. Parallels is a little pricey and a little quirky to set up to best effect, but seems rock solid.

Thanks!NickWalker wrote: ↑09 Nov 2023 14:21 Hi Tony
No unfortunately currently there isn't an option to save it for the entire session, just for same source type. I'll make a note of this as a possible future enhancement.
Cheers

Remembering repository
Whenever I use AS, I tend to follow individuals up and down various life events. I'll try to bunch census entries, but still have to swap around between (eg) birth / marriage / death / burial entries. Each time I have to fill in the Repository, and it gets a bit vexing when it hasn't changed for the...

Brand new iPad, so don't think that's the case. I went from that link. Happy to be proved wrong!tatewise wrote: ↑08 Nov 2023 10:53 Tony, FHUG KB GedExplorer links to https://www.sundin.nu/gedexplorer/ which has a link for Apple Store.
Maybe your (old?) version of iOS is not supported by the current GEDexplorer version.

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?
Most of my relatives are in Yorkshire/Lancashire (and a Scottish contingent too, so I mostly use scotlandspeople for them). I've found FMP the most useful, and it is supposed to be better for Yorkshire, but I did find some missing info in Ancestry which FMP didn't have when I added a subscription t...

Re: GEDexplorer
I was going to look into this, but the link to the App Store comes up with 'not available'. A quick google doesn't tell me much, but I can find a few references only mentioning an android version, so it looks to me like it's been dropped on iOS

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?
Tony, one change in the last 6 years is that Ancestry does have the 1939 Register, and has had for a few years now, so if you prefer Ancestry (as I do) don't let that put you off. I have both, as their coverage is different (as others have said) but I realise that's not an option for everyone. Than...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?
Just to follow up, I ran some queries against Ancestry and FMP, quickly deciding the way I want to work suits Ancestry better.

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?
I do have access to both via my local library but only at certain times, plus I'm rather spoiled by better internet access at home. I also don't have a laptop, so any trip involves bits of paper and retyping later. I also tend to work on my tree at odd hours when they aren't open. I am planning to r...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?
I realise it's six years later, just wondered if there were any new opinions? I had FMP for a few years, let it lapse over the summer and now thinking of getting a subscription for the winter (I tend not to use in the summer). Wondering if I just get FMP again or maybe try Ancestry for a change. I r...

New Radio 4 series on DNA testing — The Gift
Apologies if this is too far off topic for the FHUG, but thought people might be interested in a new series of real stories connected with DNA testing. The Gift begins on Monday 11 September at 11am with episodes broadcast on BBC Radio 4 weekly. Episodes will be available to listen back on BBC Sound...
