Re: error in import from Rootsmagic
Thank you all for your responses. Based on Mike's comments I will go with this: The EVEN tag will not allow a descriptor. The FACT tag will. Bottom line for me is if I change all the EVEN that have descriptors to FACT with a descriptor then that is an acceptable path to take. I would not want to sta...

Re: error in import from Rootsmagic
Whether the documentation is correct or in error is not the important issue right now. If FH is going to go with EVEN and FACT with no descriptor then I have a large problem because I don't have a mechanism to get my data from RM to FH. Is there any way to get a direction from CP on what they plan t...

Re: error in import from Rootsmagic
Mike, I greatly value your expertise and knowledge and I am far from an expert on GEDCOM but from all that I have read it seems that the EVEN and FACT tag should be allowed to have a descriptor on the same line like: 1 EVEN some pertinent info on this fact The info in the descriptor should be placed...

error in import from Rootsmagic
Sorry about the long post. There has been some discussion on this forum about the GEDCOM standard and how FH interprets and implements that standard. In FH version 6 I was having difficulty importing from RootsMagic since they have implemented their interpretation of GEDCOM 5.5.1 to allow an EVEN ta...

Extract part of an individuals name in a sentence
Is it possible to extract just a person surname or given name in a sentence. I'm thinking of something like "{date:YEAR}"
I was hoping to get just the surname or just the given name

Re: splitting a fact into two parts
Mike, What I am seeing is the text or sentence is not being truncated as I create the sentence but it appears that certainly in the narrative report it seems to ignore anything past about 1000 characters. I created a sentence structure that was just over 1000 and I put just plain text as the very la...

splitting a fact into two parts
I started out with TMG and I made full use of the formatting capabilities provided. In 2013-2014 I needed to make a switch and at that time I chose Rootsmagic. I spent a considerable amount of time changing all the features provided in TMG that were no longer supported by any vendor that I saw at th...

Re: Birth fact copy
Thank you Mike.
Such a simple fix - to my knowledge of FH.
That worked just as you described and now I can see all the duplicate facts that I have created in multiple fact sets. Time to clean up my act before making the move permanent

Birth fact copy
I just copied the standard birth fact to a custom set of facts. I wanted to experiment with different sentences. It did not copy but did a move from the standard set to the custom set which was not what I intended. I tried to copy it back to standard but was told I cannot do that. I also inadvertent...

<para> to start a sentence
I believe I saw this discussion somewhere but cannot find it now. When placing a <para> in the sentence template it all works fine unless it is the first of that sentence and then it seems to get dropped as a leading space. This appears to be correct. Is this a problem to be fixed or must we accept ...

Issues with FH 7
Now that FH7 is out we are seeing the usual growing pains as people migrate to the new version. Many are user related and are not seen by other users. It could be their PC or something that they have done to make the migration more difficult. There are however some issues that are real and universal...

Re: Text formatting in V7
Mike, That is exactly what I am talking about but I wonder if this is the correct way to do this since 5.5.1 does not support it and FH may completely withdraw support at sometime because of GEDCOM. One note using the {note} in the sentence only affects the sentences that use it. Therefore the forma...

Re: Text formatting in V7
Yes. I use notes to include actual genealogical data that apply to a particular fact/event. That info should be within the footnote or citation numbering so that someone can see that the data has sources. I always want to use notes at the end of a fact as perhaps some note about the fact such as a p...

Re: Text formatting in V7
Mike, I reported the problem to CP and their explanation is: "Have you changed the sentence template for any of your fact definitions to include the {note} code (see Fact Types on the Tools menu)? This is special code (called a sentence template code) that allows the note associated with a fact to b...

Re: Text formatting in V7
Thanks Mike,
Since I put a lot of my data into notes is there no way to format these fields or will I need to wait until creating an rtf file and edit that?

Text formatting in V7
I just installed V7 and I have succeeded in formatting text in a note field for a fact. The resulting sentence does not show the formatting and an rtf file also does not show the formatting.
V7 is very new so I did not find the answer in the forum. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Shared Sentence structure

I am hoping that the "other members" test does not include the primary person for this fact but just ...

Re: Shared Sentence structure

The second solution where the order of witnesses is important are you referring to the order in the sentence structure itself or in the order the witnesses appear...

I thought I had the following sentence structure for a shared fact working but it appears not to be. {individual} appeared < in the {date:YEAR} census> as head of household < in {role=Head of Household}'s household> <at {address}> < {place}> <with wife {role=Wife}> . The census was enumerated {date}...

Re: Updated maps in Version7?
This is perhaps a little off topic but I have been looking for a mapping tool for genealogy for some time. I have found one that not only will map locations but I can put in non genealogical data so I can map out a possible route from one place to another. The problem is that the underlying maps are...

Re: How Can I 'Flag' Something That I Can Easily See in Focus View?
Mike,' I have accomplished all you have said. There were two flags set by FH being Living and Private. When I added mine they appeared on a second line. There is quite a bit of screen real estate to the right of the Living and Private flags. Can I get my flags to be on the same line as the Living an...

English sources
I have been concentrating on my American ancestors that mostly emigrated between 1620 and 1660. Now I want to begin my research on my English ancestors and I am not finding much yet. Because of the time period being prior to 1660 most of my sources don't have much. Ancestry has very little from prio...
