Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?

I have to admit as to being confused as to why you would have any citations in a bibliography . By my understanding, that's not what a bibliography is for. Back in my student days, citations were in-line and cross-referenced to the sources . The bibliography on the other hand was just a list of all ...

Re: Using Function YEAR with Source Templates

Also, if you want to save the effort of having separate fields for surname and given names, you can just define a single name field and use "REVERSE" to have the surname first when you need that. for example, {Name} would output William Idle and {Name:REVERSE} would output Idle, William .

Re: Using Function YEAR with Source Templates

I use the following for the title in a source record for electoral roll entries:

Record Title Format: {Date:YEAR} electoral roll - {LGA}, {Ward}

Where Date is a defined date field and LGA and Ward are defined text fields in my source template.

Superfluous citations (revisited)

Mike, Many years ago you created a plugin that supressed superfluous citations in reports. This was discussed in the thread 13496|Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primary . Since upgrading a while back to V7 I have recreated most of my sources to take advantage of the templated sour...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names

That works well, thank you.

Some of my addresses have comma-separated parts. Is it possible to limit address to only the 1st part, as you can with addressesplaces --something to do with "text parts", although I don't remember the precise syntax?

In each Place record Note, add a labelled note such as Abbreviation: Wolverhampton, Staffs Then use the Expression =GetLabelledText(%FACT.PLAC>NOTE2%,"Abbreviation:") instead of {place} in Sentence Templates and =GetLabelledText(%INDI.XXXX.PLAC>NOTE2%,"Abbreviation:") in Diagram...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names

Similar issue for me - Broadly speaking, half my tree is in the UK and Ireland, the other half in the USA, and I stick rigidly to a 4-part place name (settlement, county, state, country) for that reason, with the third part being empty for places on this side of the pond. Ideally, in reports I want ...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.10 (February 2023)

Peter Re Short title, have you looed at the changes introduces in version 7.6.7 (Beta)? Short titles will no longer be recorded if templated sources are used. This change was prompted by this discussion . Templated sources don't use the short title. Fair enough. In which case then, it is working fo...

v7.6.10 Working OK for me thus far. [EDIT] Spoke too soon! I've just noticed it is not creating a short title for my census entries. [/EDIT] One thing I keep meaning to ask regarding the Image viewer. I have the following options selected: Link existing image already in the file , Show image title ,...

Place records for places with no names

Here's an interesting problem I haven't run into before now. I always try to use a place's correct historical name for past events while recording its current name as the standardised placename. However, some of my wife's ancestors are from colonial New York and were the first (European) settlers in...

Expanding and collapsing nodes in records window

Is there a way to expand or collapse multiple (sub-)nodes in the records window at the same time, i.e. if I want to expand the top level of several records at once, or expand all of the sub-levels in one particular record in a single click?

Re: Unmarried couples in narrative reports.

Thanks, Mike. I may go with that 2nd option. I know using a marriage event achieves the desired result, and adding the descriptor will keep the data "clean" for any future users and hopefully eliminate any potential confusion.

Unmarried couples in narrative reports.

Naming and organising digital copies of old photos

I have acquired an enormous pile of old family photographs which I need to digitise. Once I've done that, I intend to add them into my FH project. I have a date field in a source template called "Publication date". I want to be able to separate the day and month from that field to suit a particular footnote style. {Publication_date:YEAR} separates out the year for me, and I can get half way there with the day and month by using the e...

Re: Excluding witness sentences from child events in narrative reports

Granted, not always ideal - for the reasons you outlined - but in my particular case there were only 3 facts involved and there had been no prior changes to consider (if there had, I might have been less cavalier!). Nevertheless, other people's mileage may vary so perhaps it was a point worth making.

Re: Excluding witness sentences from child events in narrative reports

Setting the definition to {blank} rather than deleting it altogether did the trick. The amount of time I spend explaining to people at work that blank and zero are not the same thing in Excel formulae, you would think I would have figured that out for myself straight away! Thanks for the head...
