Re: How do you record Unknown people?

I know I've come into this late, but in my tree (which is still quite small in comparison to others in this forum), the only people I have without a 'known' surname are usually female spouses, in which case I put the husband's surname in square brackets (e.g. [Smith]). Works for me.

Re: Automatically create GIVN and SURN tags

Mike Thank you for the suggestions - very much appreciated. I've run the UDF List Plugin and didn't find anything - so all good there. I've also run your Clean Unwanted Fields plugin and can confirm that all GIVN and SURN fields have now been removed. Once again, thank you very much for the helpful ...

Re: Automatically create GIVN and SURN tags

Mike

Many thanks for the very speedy response. Glad it's not something I've done!

I can only assume that these tags were provided in the original GEDCOM that I imported when I originally started with Family Historian.

Regards

Steve

Automatically create GIVN and SURN tags

When I add a new person to my database, only the NAME tag appears to be created. Just to be clear I'm usually adding people via the 'Add Spouse/Partner' or 'Add Child' links on the Main tab of the Property box. Is there any way that I can get Family Historian to automatically add a GIVN and SURN tag...

Re: Witnesses - Potentially the same person

Many thanks for the link to the plugin Mike - it must have been my search parameters that missed that post. Fully expected the 'fuzzy logic' you mention to be a stumbling block to be honest. As you say, I think a mixture of using the results from your plugin along with a Records Window search should...

Witnesses - Potentially the same person

Apologies if this has been asked before, but a number of searches didn't bring anything up (probably more to do with my search terms than anything else  ) I have a number of 'Name Only' witnesses within my database, however, recently I had an example whereby I had 2 people who were witnesses t...

Re: Where would you record the death?

Apologies for not replying sooner to this. Whether such a Place of Note would geocode differently to the Place of Death depends on what is recorded in Place fields. If only 'Town, County, Country' then I would expect them both to be much the same, unless the hospital was a long way off. If the addre...

Re: Where would you record the death?

Big thanks you to everyone for your replies, thoughts and recommendations. It appears that we all agree that, in light of no other evidence (until I get the death certificate), the place of death should be recorded as in hospital. I'm think that I may add a 'Place of Note' fact to record the address...

Where would you record the death?

Just looking for some pointers on this one. I have an ancestor who was a taxi driver and found collapsed and unconscious at the wheel of their taxi. The local press had a small report and mentioned the house address they were found outside, but also mention that they were pronounced dead at hospital...

Recording a death at sea

I have an ancestor who died at sea (Andaman Sea) about 400km off the coast of Thailand. I have his death certificate which, very helpfully, provides the latitude and longitude of the ship when he died. I was wondering whether anyone else had recorded a Death at Sea, and how they recorded the place/a...

Re: File Naming Convention

Just to add another possibility to the excellent suggestions so far. Personally, I use reference details where possible. For example, for birth/death registrations I go with quarter_year_volume_reference (for example Q1_1934_8b_402). If there is more than one entry with the same reference, then I'll...

What a name!!

I follow a guy called Myko Clelland on Twitter (@DapperHistorian) who posted about a fabulous birth certificate registered at West Derby in 1883 where the child of Arthur Pepper and Mary Jane Pepper nee Creighton was registered with 26 given names - one for every letter of the alphabet from Ann thro...

Re: Deceased/retired Occupation

Sounds like I record mine slightly different to other people. I have a custom event called 'Occupation at Death' where I record the occupation from the death certificate exactly as it is recorded, including the 'retired' part. As regards marriage certificates (and other non-Death related documents),...

Another single tree vote from me. If it wasn't for a single tree then I may not have found out that my maternal great grandfather served on the same ship as the brother of my paternal great grandfather in WWI - just over 50 years prior to the marriage of my parents!!

I wasn't expecting my original post to end up in a long discussion such as this - but many thanks for everybody's contributions. Very interesting and informative. Just to clarify that, yes, I attach my research notes (as a local note rather than a shared note) to the overall Individual or Family rec...

Re: Latin Translation

One side of my family were Roman Catholics and, based on my experience, you will probably find a few baptisms with notes written at the side. They can provide a wealth of additional information, or at least pointers as to where to look next for certain events like marriages.

Multiple Private Notes in a query

There has been a lot of discussions in these forums regarding ToDo lists and Research Notes, which I have read with interest. I'm finding that Jane's simple private note with RN: or TD: qualifier is working well for my database. I like to keep these private notes linked to the individual or family -...

Re: To Do Lists / Work Management: What External Apps may people use?

I use a mixture of 2 web apps to help with my research and to-do lists. My research/to-do list is in Trello ( https://trello.com/home ). Trello is based on Kanban boards . Each board can have a number of columns, with each column having any number of cards (basically virtual index cards) which can h...

Re: underscore character or hyphen?

Personally I would say an underscore is better - but that is just my preferred way of naming items or files. If you have a hyphen in your date and time string and, in the future, imported a list of these strings into another program, the hyphen may be mistaken for a minus sign especially when you ar...

Re: FH6 - Extract all FH data to a PDF report file

If you want to view your GEDCOM from a USB stick then it might be worth having a look at the genealogical program ScionPC ( http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/scionpc/ ) It runs as a standalone program straight from your USB stick and it doesn't need to use anything like registry settings, etc so I wo...
