Re: Findmypast 1921 census discount
My failure rate is much higher than that, probably due to the appalling transcriptions - my favourite being 'Caroline' indexed as 'Carshine'. Have just checked and there are still 5 'Carshine's in the 1921 census indexes....

Re: Give Witness.. then Migrate Census. Importing from TMG
Can we just stop right here? I've just re-read one of your early posts and you said Having said that - my reality is this. I HAVE to change from TMG as it does not run under Win10. That is entirely WRONG. TMG works fine under every Windows version back to about v3.1. What makes you think this???? Don

Re: Give Witness.. then Migrate Census. Importing from TMG
Hi - understand your thinking re converting out of TMG, although that then leads to the question - why? But that is something best discussed off-forum, I think. To answer your question on how NOT to use the FH sentence conversion process, it fairly simple. Once you've said you want a New Project, th...

Re: Fact Type missing from FH after Conversion from TMG
The first thing is to check how your Apprentice Tag is setup in TMG. I suspect it may be set with an illegal GEDCOM name such as APPR or EMPL. Go to your TMG Master Tag Type list, edit the Apprentice tag and look in the Other tab - change the GEDCOM export setting to 1 EVEN, 2 Apprentice (in other w...

Re: Give Witness.. then Migrate Census. Importing from TMG
The sentence results you are seeing in FH are exactly as I would expect, as your TMG sentence structures are similar to mine, although not quite as complex. The FH v7 facility to convert TMG sentences to FH format has been very poorly implemented, with a complete disregard as to the documented TMG s...

Re: Do TMG Custom Tags go to FH Attributes or Events?
Martin - closing down TMG and re-starting it will not have the slightest affect on what you're seeing. As you haven't mentioned it, I suspect you are not performing a Maintenance->Reindex, and that is probably the cause of your problem. And to answer the other question raised by JohnnyCee, no, you c...

The non-transfer of the TMG Citation Reference field has been discussed in the past at great length on at least 2 occasions - do a Search on this forum for 'citation reference' and you'll find them.

Peter I'm not sure if you have obtained the divorce records at https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=22745216 where you father appears to be the co-respondent. These records are reserved until 2072, but given all parties are deceased and you can prove your reason for wanting to s...

Re: TMG Import into FH 6.2.7
I would agree with Mike. The standard Birth tag in TMG has its GEDCOM form set as BIRT, and such events come across to FH correctly in the direct import process. Suggest you look in the TMG Master Tag Type list and check the GEDCOM setting for Birth, or whatever tag type you use for Birth events (if...

Re: TMG Import into FH 6.2.7
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might achieve this so I can save untold hours of reformatting when I bring it into FH6. Perhaps an editing of the GEDCOM file might fix this issue? Can you concatenate sentences in FH6? There is no sentence concatenation feature in FH6. My suggestion for yo...

Re: Ancestry, Find My Past or My Heritage?
That's sort of how Ancestry hints work - if you put up a tree, you'll get no hints, initially. As soon as you look at any part of your tree in tree view, the Ancestry fairies will start sprinkling hints, but ONLY for the parts of your tree you've looked at. If you want to get ALL the hints, you need...

Re: Java Pros and Cons
It seems that in this Ancestris scenario, the risks are primarily via virus exploits perhaps via Email, which is much the same as most other Windows related risks, and minimised by a good anti-virus tool. Absolutely agree Mike. And that's pretty much the same conclusion in the Aussie Govt document ...

Re: Java Pros and Cons
Mervyn's JRE/JDK explanation is correct. If you try to download the 'latest' Java run-time, Oracle will offer 1.8 u221 (as of now), but if you ask for the full JDK, you can choose one of the later versions (which include the same-level JRE). And I'd agree with the other comments that the security co...

As mentioned above, I'd use GENMATCHER from MudCreek Software. Not free, but very cheap. Built for just this purpose (comparing GEDCOM files). Has saved me hours of time in the past.

Linda, I'm afraid you problem is caused by GEDCOM - the MARR tag is for "A legal, common-law, or customary event of creating a family unit of a man and a woman as husband and wife" I'd suggest you have a look at https://www.tamurajones.net/SameSexMarriageInGEDCOM.xhtml for a good explantio...

Re: Importing from TMG 9.05 > FH 6.2.7.......no exhibits
Here are some thoughts on trying to pinpoint the problem (which sounds like a corrupt exhibit). I am assuming all the usual TMG Maintenance actions run cleanly currently. 1. try the TMGU utility and see is if finds any issues (probably not, but worth a try) 2. if you use Second Site, create a site t...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG
Fair comment Adrian. But I'm not suggesting (as others seem to have assumed) that I ALWAYS do what I described. In fact, I hardly do it at all - but I do (usually) do it for books that are in my library. Why? Because others might want to find said book, and I'm not expecting them to knock on my door...

Just to go back up this thread, if I may, to Adrian's question of why would anyone want to record a book being in more than one repository, when the important thing is that he found it in a particular library, let me give an example. Let's say my source is a book in my own library (which is of littl...

.... and I should also have added that a TMG Source can refer to MULTIPLE Repositories - that is a book can be found in multiple libraries. This obvious real-world situation is not allowed by some packages - Legacy, for example, only allows one Repository per Source, implying every book in the world...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG
Adrian, the TMG structure is similar to FH's, in that (to slightly modify your words): 1. A Repository can be referenced by many Sources. 2. A Source can be referred to by many Citations 3. A Tag can be supported by many Citations. (Note TMG uses the GEDCOM term Tag, rather than FH's non-GEDCOM term...
