Re: To Do List

I use Evernote for everything. I dont own the book on using Evernote for genealogy but I read the article on a USA genealogy site soon after Evernote began. I still use the free version limited to my desk top computer and phone.
I dont want to do lists within fh since fh runs only on Windows.

Re: Change Focus window to that shown in property box

Thank you for that info Cole Valley Girl - tho I may find it hard to change my habits.
Trevor Rix is correct - I used Generations probably under his guidance.

Re: Change Focus window to that shown in property box

One important point to make here is that the Focus screen setting out a family in three generations is similar to the main screen in other genealogy software. I assume that the original fh worked from a diagram directly to the Property Box and, though imaginative in computer terms, it was a disincen...

Re: Change Focus window to that shown in property box

I have always disagreed about this. The back and forth arrows are useful and I made errors because I assumed that the focus person would change in the property box as well. One has to picture the situations where users might be using these arrows. I was entering German census returns where household...

Re: Windows 10 upgrade questions

When it comes to replacing that Windows 7 PC with a Windows 10 PC, you may well be able to continue to use that wide screen monitor, the keyboard, the speakers, and your printer with just a brand new bare tower. It largely depends on the connectors. When the time comes, ask here for advice. . Thank...

Re: Windows 10 upgrade questions

Thank you Mike. For both the explanations. I have Mcafee. So may be will be able to keep this computer and Windows 7 after all. I have always kept my computers for 8 years and never had one fail. This one is only 7 years old. I am particularly fond of it as it has a beautiful and wide screen. I can ...

Re: Windows 10 upgrade questions

I upgraded a brand new and simple Lenovo Windows 8 lap top when prompted by a message rolled out from MS. I had almost no data on the lap top. All the software was reinstalled. Everything seemed the same. John Lewis offered to do it for me but I just followed the prompts. However I use a Sony Vaio d...

Re: Grumble - Gender requirement

When I cant do something I want to do in fh I still look at Roots Magic where a person of unknown gender can indeed have a child. There is a warning icon of a potential data problem in RM. But that is all.

Grumble - Gender requirement

Looking through an archive catalogue I note that the author I am pursuing had a male cousin - surname not specified. I already know the name of the shared grandfather and can enter an "unknown" child of that grandfather. But it seems that fh will not allow me to enter a grandchild (the cou...

Re: Tutorial on Queries

As always, Mike is correct. My choice of words not sufficiently precise. But from user point of view, one finds that the clickable list is now (indirectly) sorted by surname.

Re: Tutorial on Queries

Yes of course. Thank you for explaining about the gender thing. I am a bit slow.
And of course too about the sorting. Just that I had not expected so have a sorted, clickable list of names along side the one which is not clickable. A welcome by-product.

Re: Tutorial on Queries

Mike, to be honest, I did not understand that. About Males etc. and my attempts were rejected. But I found another link which has fixed it =Field(FactOwner(%FACT%,1,MALES_FIRST),'INDI.NAME:SURNAME_FIRST') This appears to produce both males and females? And at the same time that added column sorts th...

Re: Tutorial on Queries

Mike, I have been using your Fact queries a lot. Maybe even when I dont need to and a person query would work. The names at the moment come sorted by forename. The column is =GetRecord(%FACT%) Is there any way of editing this so I can sort by surname? If necessary adding the forename in another colu...

Re: Question re facts and more specifically, events and attributes

After clearing my Occupation Events imported from TMG, I still have both Attribute and Event for some of my custom tags. Not sure what harm is done by leaving them? And religion is not an attribute by the way. People on my databases convert from one to another or underwent confirmation in another Ch...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Thank you Mike for your help with the import, and preparing the Project for export to Gedsite. The site has been created and uploaded. All but one of the trees on my site are now made from fh and Gedsite, and export from fh projects using Mike's plug in is normally problem free. So perhaps in spite ...

Re: Private Individuals

Mike writes that Ancestry automatically privatises living people. That may be true for the normal trees on their site. But is that true for the trees of direct ancestors (and only ancestors) uploaded in conjunction with DNA matching? My own experience is that it does not.Otherwise how would I have b...

Re: Private Individuals

After having a DNA test, and for DNA matches to see, I put up a public tree on ancestry uploading GEDCOM which shows only my own ancestors. My parents are dead so I show their names, but other people enter a person called Private. In ancestry a tree is either public or private. You cant have just pa...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

First to Mike - No, it is all done. Thank you. As I said, each person has their Occupation. I worked down the result list from the query and took the name of the occupation out of every Occupation Note field and pasted it into the correct field. jbtapscott - Thank you for the suggestions. You are ri...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Thank you Mike. I have done that. All the woollen slubbers and lampshade fringers now have their Attribute Occupations. The Employment event on my fh was custom. I have used it for 3 people and will write future biographies in Employment, as you suggest. I need to report back to you that the plug in...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Agreed Mike. Thank you for the extra rows for the query and for your help in sorting this. The reason I dont have witness sentences i...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Forgive me Mike - I would like to ask your further opinion. All my personal family trees - 8 Projects are now in fh. I have examined them all for shared Occupation events. I found two only and removed them. I ran the Event by label query on all 8 trees. The only Project which includes any Occupation...

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Thank you. I am about to leave for dentist.

However, I couldnt resist trying the new column which you wrote me.

It holds only one record. From which I conclude that I have regularly added dates and notes to my Occupation (attribution) entries.

Re: Occupation Problem TMG to fh to Gedsite

Mike - I ran the query for Occupation. 513 results of which only 22 instances have a blank Value column. They are all dated. I rather think that these were added after the project was already in fh. The import from TMG created custom Occupation events. But the fh additions are all attributes. And ye...
