Re: I Quit FH for TMG

Thank you. The odd thing is that I already had it, but it turns out that the top plugins on the pane list were invisible when the pane opened. I see now that one can lengthen the pane. But I now see that I dont have any source Templates? Are there a standard set or does each user have to create them...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG

This may need a new thread. However - I've returned to FH because the shortcomings I perceive have been addressed by Calico Pie or by plugins (e.g. creating sources from templates). I agree with the view in this post Cole Valley girl. But actually no. I have still not managed to find any info on cre...

Saving colour diagrams as pdf

I have a black and white printer.
When I save the diagram as pdf I think one has one has to go through a fictional save to print routine?
But in my case this results in a black and white diagram.
I think it would be nicer for the recipient to to have it in colour.
How does one do this?

Calico Pie replied that they did not handle alphabets that ran from right to left.
I seem to remember that I experimented with Rootsmagic and it was no better.

Re: underscore character or hyphen?

Apologies - I am using a Dell dual language Russian English keyboard, set to English. I thought I had used Shift and 8 which if I do it now produces * an asterisk, just as you say. But what is shown on my 8 key is ^ which is also shown on my query, and again on the numeral 6 key which must have mudd...

Re: Birth Registration and Mother's Parents names

German certificates are much the same. I enter many records from overseas which need additional fields and I dont use AS at all except for UK censuses. It is quite simple and quick using fh on its own to add multiple fields and people for a census and then copy and paste the full entry and source.

Re: underscore character or hyphen?

I am absolutely not an IT expert - but underline can be a problem too. I help friends occasionally and had trouble a couple of years ago when the sole email address (demanded for a mobile phone security check) included an underline. I now avoid underlines which in any case have always been used to i...

Property boxes?

The hardest thing for me when new to fh (and still) is remembering what the various windows and panes were called. One cant follow the Help unless one remembers the names. So I put Property Box in the search field above and got the diagram showing the Person Property Box. That is teh one I know. But...

Re: ThruLines on Ancestry

It is the purpose of computers to extract information one might not otherwise notice. Thanks to Jane's adapting her Gedmatch event and query to show the amount of match, I can now see that the DNA matches I discovered via Thrulines are with relatively small overlap - The common link is near the top ...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

Mike - Obviously I havent or had forgot - my memory was never good. But your kind link is an example of how help in fh defeats once - so much to search through. I will try and remember to use Ctrl. Anyway it all looks good and I am going to edit and enter some matches to I can see who is who. And by...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

Thank you. I had a bit of trouble editing the fact template as you can't put in a carriage return? I had to download the original again. I also couldnt make the new column expression work, (it said it was illegal for the type of query) so I adapted an existing one, Jane =GetLabelledText(%INDI.EVEN-G...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

O you are brilliant Jane - Thank you. I realise I have taken a lot of your time over this, just as when Mike taught me queries. It is because I am learning new things. Labelled text is new to me and at some point I shall go through the preceding posts and learn how to use it. And setting up template...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

Jane Sorry to bother you about this. I have been using your system - or at least your Gedmatch Fact plus query. I renamed the query so the name is preceded by an asterisk so if I want to show my husband his DNA matches and how they fit, I just hit the query button and the arrow. But I dont know wher...

Re: ThruLines on Ancestry

It is correct that the through lines links - or some of them, rely on users trees. I do not think ancestry ideal and have already complained to them about the lack of a place search on DNA matches' and other members' trees. However I went thro all my thru lines and found the combination of trees use...

Re: File organisation in Windows

Thank you so much Mike. I did some google searches. And listened to a You tube tutorial before asking here. But it wasnt clear and I know you have a gift for explaining computers to people like me. I understood your answer, thank you. What you say makes sense in view of our having had a new computer...

File organisation in Windows

I would appreciate any advice from other Window users on how to organise files. And to correct a problem that seems to have arisen with duplicate file locations. While updating my website with File zilla , File zilla was suddenly unable to find the folder on my local computer where the website HTML ...

Re: Back up - restore and custom Queries

I have been using fh for 3 years. But until I read this thread, I did not understand that backing up one's custom queries etc involved running Mike's plug in. Surely the problem is that as a new user, one does not yet know about plug ins and may not have started to use them. And looking at the book ...

Connecting to Restored rootsweb hosted sites -

I wonder if anyone here with IT and FTP knowledge could help me please. My website (in my signature) was restored by Rootsweb and I set up a new password. Today for the first time, using Filezilla for FTP, I managed to get entry to the website using instructions found on line. http://sites.rootsweb....

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

Thank you for explaining, Jane This shows how badly we in London need a session of your instruction Jane. You work from a diagram, whereas I dont have a default diagram text scheme. And I dont think I can manage to grapple with it just at the moment. As am not feeling too intelligent and am trying t...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian

Jane I have been making great use of your attribute and the associated query. Thank you so much. However, I wonder whether I am missing some skill in the use of fh? As I am having to use paper and pencil! I am sure you must manage things better. I add the DNA match John Doe to the bottom of his line...

Just a thought about my projects - I dont have many attached images. Only 3 images in my big project - I planned to link source images in fh but never got round to it. Could it be Janes's images?
