Re: One-Name Studies and FH

Hi Jessie, I started researching my family tree many years ago. My paternal line is ROLLIN - an uncommon name, but my maternal grandmother's surname was Fothergill, her father (my g-g grandfather) died at the battle of Spion Kop in the second Boer War. I have traced his family back, via Nottinghams...

Re: One-Name Studies and FH

Jessie I too do a Surname Study in to the Lefever and variants names. I do mine a little differently in that I have a project per country as I have found few who migrate between countries and those that do it is easy just to export their record and then import it into the other countries project. I...

One-Name Studies and FH

I’ve been happily using FH for about ten years and always recommend it to other researchers. I still only use about 50% of its potential, though, and want to change that! Thanks to a brick-wall, I created a FH Project three years ago to help me work on an unofficial One-Name Study (ONS) on the Fothe...

Re: Floating window problem

As Mike said in his first post, this can all be controlled by the Tools->Preferences->Workspaces. By default it looks like this: Workspaces Default.png But if you change it to this then the properties box will be docked and always there on the records and query windows too: Workspaces Updated.png (...

Floating window problem

(This problem started a couple of weeks ago in version 6.2 before my upgrade to 7 today. I use Windows 10.) In the past, whenever I double-clicked a person in the Records Window it would automatically open up the Focus Window with the Property Box docked (which is how I like it). Now when I double-c...

Re: Plucking up courage to upgrade

Doing nothing and retaining my current settings sounds perfect! I tried using that plugin last time but I got in such a pickle with it that I ended up just manually recreating my old settings. When I said start afresh, I just meant that I would use the new default settings in Version 7 and adapt the...

Plucking up courage to upgrade

I've been putting it off for too long and I've decided to upgrade tomorrow from my 6.2 to 7! There are just too many great new features to ignore it for any longer. I've spent the day doing full backups of all my projects and saving copies on OneDrive for extra peace of mind. I've also read everythi...

Re: Private notes showing

Thank you, Mike.

I changed the option to save in UTF-8 format and tried it again but still no luck.

I think I'll have to give up today and look afresh tomorrow.

Re: Private notes showing

Thank you, Mike. Yes, I did make a copy first because you'd kindly underlined that. I've saved the gedcom on my computer under My Documents > Family Historian Projects > The Carter Line > Public. It looks like this: Gedcom problem.jpg I test it first (the top one ending in backup 2) and it opens in ...

Re: Private notes showing

Many thanks, Mark. I'm not bothered about Ancestry hints. I've been trying to upload a small gedcom for a DNA match. He's a 3rd cousin so I've just tried the Split Tree Helper and deleted all the notes which worked perfectly. When I open that gedcom to check, it's perfect, with him as the root and n...

Thank you, Mike. Yes, I was doing it in the way you outlined. I've also tried it with selecting the whole project but with the same results. The square brackets are there as well.

Private notes showing

I'm trying to export a gedcom to Ancestry as a public tree. I'm not very good with technology but, usually, I shrink the diagram, highlight it with mouse, add to Named List called Tree Export, then move all the people into the gedcom, exclude all the private notes, etc and it works fine. I don't kno...

Re: Find My Past support ending

Jessie, your Profile on the right of your posting says you are using FH V6.2 so you need to upgrade to FH V7.0 to benefit from that change to the internal Web Browser Window. Thank you, Mike. I wasn't sure that I wanted to upgrade ... just because it might be too hard to get my head around any chan...

Re: Find My Past support ending

No, you haven't done anything wrong -- the workaround opens a browser window outside FH. I imagine it should only be a few weeks until the next release, so you could revert to the internal browser if you're willing ti out up with the warnings. Brilliant, thank you ... that's exactly what I'll do!

Re: Find My Past support ending

Thank you all.

I've done the workaround as explained in the Knowledge Base. When I click on the hint now it opens in a completely new window ... not right next to the property box as it did before so it's difficult to compare them side by side. Have I done something wrong?

Find My Past support ending

Apologies if this question has been asked before. I did check for the answer in the forum and Knowledge Base first. For months now I've been getting a message on Family Historian (when I click on the hints) that the Find My Past support will be ending and I should download Microsoft Edge. I've been ...

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death

Sorry, Mike, but when I click on the Individual + Attributes + Cause of Death ... there is no option to save it so I just close it then OK out but nothing has been changed in the diagram ... it's still missing the cause of death?

You know you said this: "Now in the Used Items select the top Cause of Death item and click Edit button below. In the Template box delete the trailing %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.DATE:COMPACT% and click OK." Should it still look like the picture attached or should I have done the Insert new...

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death

Well, the good news is that the age is now showing and perfect. The bad news is that the cause of death has now disappeared. Sorry, Mike, I must have done something wrong there!
