Re: How should we use the internet as a genealogy data source.

Many thanks for the information about the Coalmining History Resources. I looked up Raleys to see if they had moved the information and apparently they are in administration so not much help. I will look up the links mentioned.

How should we use the internet as a genealogy data source.

I should clarify that I am not asking about the reliability of the information that we obtain from the internet but rather will it still be there in decades to come. Let me explain with a specific example. Many of my relatives were coal miners and some years ago on the internet I found a collections...

Re: Source help

The existence of an age field in the Birth event does suggest that the Fact definition has been altered. Have a look at the Tools>Fact Types. Select Birth from the list and then Edit from the right hand list of buttons. The Fields required near the bottom will probably include a check against Age, u...

Re: Brothers marrying sisters

Just a passing comment: would the second level relationship pull out this information. I have only one similar instance in my tree where a sister and brother married a brother and sister. The second level relationship reads 'Thomas --- is husband of sister of husband of ---' David Added in edit. I w...

Re: File organisation in Windows

There are a number of mentions here of not storing your data on the same drive as the Windows operating system. As far as I can tell, and I could easily be wrong, no one has mentioned that the standard user folders can be stored anywhere you like (including C:\DATA) and Microsoft provides an officia...

Re: Organisation of media folders

I did read the caveat and it is possible that FH is one of the older 32-bit programs which cannot open or save very long path name files - I don't know. I was not recommending the use of a registry hack simply pointing out for interested parties where it can be found.

Re: Organisation of media folders

I didn't know about the change in Long path names in Windows 10. Good to know. I have found an article about it with instructions at https://www.howtogeek.com/266621/how-to-make-windows-10-accept-file-paths-over-260-characters/ If you are uncomfortable accessing the Registry there is a link - Long P...

Re: Wildcards on GRO website

That is very strange. I used FreeBMD to look up the reference and got a name. Putting that name into the GRO gives

so there must be two entries with the same index reference.

Re: 1939 Register - Handwriting Help Please

If he is on the 1939 register he must have died. A quick search on Family Search reveals James Dennis Harrison, Death Registration Oct-Nov-Dec 1986, Blackburn, Birth date 26 Aug 1926, vol. 40, p 105 Which is reasonable evidence that this is the person mentioned in the 1939 Register. Re: New Windows 10 Clipboard History

I agree, it is not the best implementation. There is also some confusion over the latest Windows update as it seems that Microsoft have stopped automatic update, for now, because of issues regarding deletion of personal files. If clipboard history is a problem it can be switched off. Type clipboard ...

New Windows 10 Clipboard History

I see the latest update of Windows 10 finally has a simple clipboard history built-in, accessed via <WinKey>+V once it is switched on, The first time you try <WinKey>+V the option to switch it on comes up. You could set up a custom fact with an Auto Create note containing the partial link and then add a data reference to the note in your query.

Re: Split GEDCOM lines at 70 characters?

Have you tried using word wrap in your editor? I use notepad++ with the gedcomlexer plugin and word wrap enabled. The gedcom tags are colour coded so there is no confusion as to where a piece of text is located within the file.

Re: Custom Query: events at specific place

At the risk of complicating matters it is worth pointing out that as single row filters the filters suggested by Mike and John do the same thing. However, added to other filters they can have differing effects. For example, if you start by adding all individuals with a specific surname then John's f...

I agree with Mervyn that the problem is with rtf conversion. There was a discussion of the indent about 4 years ago https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=11171&p=52356#p52343 and in the final post Simon Orde stated that the problem would be resolved and it has, within the report...

Re: Source which provides evidence for sibling relationship

I'm getting the impression that you are not linking any of these siblings to the parents at this point. If that is the case then you can link them as siblings via the parents and siblings tab in the focus window. This will produce a family record with (parents not known) but with them as children. T...
