Re: To Do Lists / Work Management: What External Apps may people use?
There is a very effective replacement to Evernote called Joplin. (https://joplinapp.org/) It is under active, open source development, and is free if you accept that notes aren't shared between different user accounts. A paid subscription allows server based sharing between user accounts on Joplin C...

Re: Bulk adding source data
I'd love to use this as it is exactly what I want to do. I have a named list and want to add a source link to all the individuals in it (~ 250). 1. Create the source 2. Create a named list of the individuals 3. Run the following rough and ready plugin fs=fhNewItemPtr() tsour=fhPromptUserForRecordSel...

Re: Using FH & Ancestral Sources via a Remote Desktop (RDP)
Hi Helen, Remote Desktop Manager is, as far as I can tell, Windows only - they don't even mention what OS it runs under on their website, I have had to check out the downloads and see what executables are there. I'm running Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3832 The...

Re: Using FH & Ancestral Sources via a Remote Desktop (RDP)
Hi Trevor, Space on the SD card of my Linx tablet isn't a problem, my total Family History data is 16 GB, and I use a memory stick and AllwaySync on the Windows devices. The cloud might not be available in a churchyard in North Yorkshire when you find that tantalizing inscription that just might be ...

Re: Using FH & Ancestral Sources via a Remote Desktop (RDP)
Hi Trevor, We have two desktop PCs that are running Windows 7 and a Linx 10.1 tablet that I bought in 2015 running Windows 8.1. The two PCs have had a customised install of Windows 7. Not unusually, they have physically separate "data" and "programs/OS" discs, but in our case, th...

Thanks to all who have posted, the thoughts and comments have been really helpful in any number of ways. It really is good to hear from such a knowledgeable group of users. (It takes me back to my work days, when the best test of an idea was for fellow engineers to bounce these kind of thoughts abou...

Using FH & Ancestral Sources via a Remote Desktop (RDP)
Has anyone tried using a Remote Desktop to a Windows 7 PC running FH & AS ? With the the demise of support for Win7 earlier this year, I have taken the significant step of leaving the Windows environment for a Linux one. I am now running a dual boot of Windows 7 and Linux Mint 19.3 (Cinnamon edi...

Re: Hello Everyone
Hi Jane, Likewise, I'm seeing odd artifacts with the gold font, even though my LCD screen is not venerable. I do suffer from astigmatism, but the new glasses fix that. However, astigmatic is what the gold font looks a bit like - some verticals are out of focus when the bold, gold text is used. It lo...

Unrelated Individuals in AS and FH
I usually create a temporary parent for them as child of the Head of Household in AS, named something like : - 'parent of (name of child) /family name/' and then add the Grandchild to that parent. This saves breaking off to go and look at the FH file or project and perhaps having to indulge in some...

Exporting data from a query to CSV file
I'm trying to put source data from my FH gedcom file into a csv format file for import into GenQuiry. The query Result Set truncates the Actual Text to around 154 characters. Is this a deliberate limit, a result of the GEDCOM spec or a bug ?

Custom ID's & Icons
Further to the creation of Icons - I use a graphics package called GIMP (it's free). When creating some new icons with GIMP, I have discovered that bitmap images (.bmp) can have 'Colour Space information' included. If they do, then Family Historian will give an error :- 'cannot display icon' when ...

Some time ago I came across this thread, and found the various points raised extremely interesting, as it looked to be discussing several issues that I have been wrestling with over the years. Sorry, by my images didn't upload.

Second marriage dates on Family Group Reports
Hi Maureen, I don't get marriage dates appearing in the Husband or Wife sections of the family group reports (using the default settings) The dates only appear in the Family section at the top of the report. Have you altered a setting for what gets shown in the report ? Here are two pages of a famil...

To amplify Jane's explanation, but using her screenshot. Once you have found the person in the records window using any of the ideas already suggested, click on the magnifying glass symbol with the word 'focus' that is in the toolbar directly above the records list. This will take you to the focus ...

I'd downloaded acc2ged a couple of years ago, when originally deciding to build the Lotus Approach database, but felt that a 10 year old DOS program was not something I wanted to spend time getting to know too closely. I can cope well with DOS (was the System Administrator at work from 1989 to 1995 ...

Tony and Jane have both answered one half of the question - export. There are also several programs that will convert GEDCOM files to any number of formats. What about import ? I'm now in the stage of Family History Research that requires family reconstitution, i.e. I have (probable) cousins, with ...

Using flags to colour code the focus window
Something I am experimenting with is using the Individual's note field (the one at the bottom of the properties window to the right of the focus window). I'm putting the Ahnentafel number related to myself in there, and it then appears under the individual's dates in the focus boxes. I have a mai...

V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
It's probably worth noting that the cause of the error is related to having an installation of FH that originally started with version 2. When I bought the upgrade from My History at the Scarborough Family History Fair in 2009, I happened to mention that I had used FH since version 2. I was then g...
