Re: Storing Documents
If you have copies (digital and printed out) please ask yourself if any of the original documents should be deposited at the local records office. They will be preserved and conserved - if you need to you can restrict access. I’ve lodged some things with mine and was welcomed with open arms (includi...

Re: Source Types and templates in fh?
Elizabeth thingee is the first to say that things should be recorded in a way that you and others can find the source again if you need to. If you are not going to produce an academic/published tome, or perhaps doing it as a paid professional, then you don't need to follow her very precise method, a...

Was there an epidemic? I wondered if this was part of a multiple or even mass burial and so done as soon as possible? (And I agree "Tenth"!)

Re: Sources for the Drouin Collection
Has ESM died since 17march ... Date of the last post on her site? I am sure there is a way around what you want... but with the flexibility of FHn you can achieve her aim..."can others follow the trail'? I use long title for precise detail, and short title for quick ID which doesn't in my case ...

Just this morning got the Divorced, Bigamist, Bereaved book... worth every (2nd hand) penny as answered my general question of rules about re marriage in Church of divorced person... the finer detail may only ever be known to the people who got married (the divorced wife who describes herself as a w...

Rebecca Probert has written on this... have a rootle on Amazon or local library. She I think is a law lecturer, but writes for the rest of us when comes to Family history (sorry tried to cut and paste a link but iPad won't play!). Her latest book was reviewed favourably on LostCousins a bit ago.

Re: One Name Studies
Not used Clooz, but used the other two. I think FHn and Custodian serve slightly different purposes. For me Custodian (version 3) was brilliant for holding census information of an entire place, over time... and generally keeping track of a place/ house over time. What I did not find easy on that wa...

Re: Where am I?
I agree ... to me the letters do read "shielding". But I thought it might be a corrupted version of "sheiling" which is a summer hut in Scotland and northern England... used by farmers. But it's also been used as a house name...

Untried suggestion as not on windows 10 ... but perhaps use tab with the shift button held down ... think that how you put a tabbed space (rather than move to next cell) in a table in Word
Re: Copyright
A "yes" here too...please. I just regard everything done by other people as in copyright, unless its REALLY clear it's not, or it's clear it has passed out of copyright (which is often difficult to establish), but err on the "if in doubt, leave it out" principle. I transcribe ess...

Have a look at the work of Elizabeth Shown Mills (https://www.evidenceexplained.com/) ... mind boggling in detail in one sense but she was commended by the Strathclyde Genealogy team when I did their course. There is a huge amount in her books and on web site. it's American so there are some funnies...

Hi Karen I loved the Strath course (back in 2010/1 in Bruce Durie's last year) other than, as previous user of FHn (and delighted to be back using it tho not [yet] upgraded to 5 or 6), having to use FTM. I found/find FTM much less intuitive ... And assuming that you have been given same guidance abo...

Re: Problems getting information from relatives!
People are often happy to receive, but not to send, family information. I have shared info in the past in the hopes of an exchange and it's gone into a black hole with no further/amending info sent to me. Also have shared something saying this info "for your private use, for background, and not...

Re: Citing Non Conformist Image Records
My nearest analogy is books or long articles... I have a source record with the full ( or as much or as little as I want) transcript of the text.. this does not get cited to an individual/family but is there to refer to under eg "book consulted [name]" in the short title column for the ful...

Re: Changing repositories
I agree that the language is not helpful. Its also noticeable in some of the example sheets, which Mills gives in her book and on the web site, that she does not use the word "repository". For me the issue is as much about who is going to see what I record, and can the trail be followed, a...
