New version of Family Historian?

I have just installed v7.0.22, and noticed that the terms and conditions stated specifically that it was the Windows version, and looking further the 'About Family Historian' screen also states that I have the Windows version of the software. I haven't seen a previous mention of there being versions...

Re: Storing Documents

And following on from the above comments, never be tempted to laminate original documents. The sleeves are not of archival quality and can never be removed

If you have a fragile document, talk to one of the conservators at your local Record Office before taking any action.

Re: New Look FreeBMD

FreeBMD very happily accepts donations to keep the service running. Take a look at https://www.freebmd.org.uk/donations.shtml for details. For those who do not like seeing adverts, or maybe just some forms of advertising, perhaps making a financial donation could set a cookie which effectively says ...

Prompted by Jane's posting, some Group users may not be aware of the FHUG Support page at https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=info:support_fhug Looking at a good website is a little like looking at a swan gracefully gliding across a pond - you don't see the feet paddling furiously below the sur...

One initial thought at 1am - though you should have spotted a problem with other programs. Could your new PC be set up to open programs with a double click, rather than single?

I too use Hitman Pro.Alert and it has flagged up genuine software before. Their recommendation - obviously subject to the user being 100% happy with the file being run - was to temporarily disable vaccination - Please just disable the feature 'Vaccination' under the button 'Risk reduction'. See imag...

Thanks Bill

I have to agree with Mike on having the icon show the state of the option, rather than what it will do if clicked on. Once a user has selected it, you then see the resulting popup, but in today's fast paced world it is all too easy to assume rather than check ;) As an aside - when selecting the subs...

Highlight the person that you want to be the Root in the Records window, then in the Edit menu click on 'File Root', then 'Set as File Root' and you are done :)

Re: Windows Virtual Desktop

Whilst on a technical level Family Historian may work under WVD, I wonder if we could fall foul of our license if Calico Pie decided to keep strictly to the terms, It says - You may not rent, lease, license, distribute or otherwise transfer the Software or your Licence to use it without the express ...

Thanks for pointing that out, Helen - perhaps Jane should have it on at least an annual reminder :) And as well as the straight cash donation facility, I will try and remember the Amazon link. Like many of us no doubt I do go to their website more often than I should - and as there is no extra cost ...

Re: Best way to input information

I've been caught with a similar situation before, where I think too long about what I want to say, and the page then times out as it thinks that I've forgotten about it. So what I tend to do now for anything more than a short message is to create it in Word or a simple text file and then copy and pa...

Re: Problem with notifications

Gowermick - rather than having to go searching for posts when you lose the alerts, have you tried looking at the Message Notification list (link adjacent to your User name at the top of the screen). Not ideal, but at least they will all be in one place! Clutching at straws - there are links which al...

Re: Best way to capture images

As well as considering the advice on here, perhaps the document conservators at the local Record Office could be approached for their thoughts? At the very least they would know the best way to flatten out documents. I've just purchased at auction a number of large group photos of my Grandfather's W...

As an alternative, given that lugging a desktop scanner to a relative's house even with a laptop might be too cumbersome for one certificate - and it may not be possible to borrow the document itself - why not think about a portable self contained scanner? I use a Flip-Pal unit which can be used as ...

AdrianBruce - you mention that your PC is protected by a login. So is mine - but I don't have any illusions that it will defeat a determined data thief. All the login password does is stop a casual user getting access to a computer - a little like a personalised on switch. If an unauthorised person ...

Jane Try putting just the address and year of interest into Ancestry search, using the keyword and subsequent date fields. Then drill down through the data sets to the Electoral Rolls. Look at all the entries, as I've just spotted that not all the residents appear together on the same page (see seco...

Perhaps instead of a physical tree, some clever programmer could create some software which would take the detail from any gedcom and create a virtual tree which could be viewed through a headset such as Oculus Rift? The basic idea is already being considered - see https://www.wareable.com/wearable-...

Hi JLeb You can certainly add web addresses into your file, like any other text - but I would caution against it as an alternative to cutting and pasting. The reason being that the information is there now, but you don't know it will still be there tomorrow. Even commercial websites can lose licence...
