Re: Exporting life dates to GedSIte

Mike,
Thank you for your help. It is useful to know that I can't easily export the life dates from FH, and I will take it up on the GedSite group, to which I am already subsribed.

Exporting life dates to GedSIte

Like another group member who posted here recently, I have just embarked on using GedSite. Many of the individuals in my project have baptism dates, but no birth dates. As far as I can see, Gedsite doesn't have an equivalent to FH's LifeDates function. So can I export this information from FH as an ...

Please don't apologise for being a newcomer - I've been using FH for over ten years, and I still learn a lot from the answers to questions like yours.

Re: Where born in census entries

You could assign more than one birth event to an individual (surprisingly FH lets you do this) each with its own source. Or you can enter any text string in the Place field, for example "Bath or Bristol". Or as I normally do, put the most probable location in the Place field, with a note explaining ...

Re: Whole record source question

I can only speak for myself, and tell you that I use "whole record" sources for most, but not all my information, and that it depends where the information comes from. For example, I have discovered individuals for the first time from census records, which in some cases give name, age, place of birt...

Re: Census entry - Individual v Family

Helen,
I agree that an individual appearing on a census record doesn't necessarily prove residence - but for me a whole family group at the same address and no-one else is a different matter.

Re: Census entry - Individual v Family

Census entries are a bit of an anomaly, even for individuals. The census is no more a life event than, say, completing a tax return or applying for a passport. The published census record is simply a very valuable source of information about individuals. Because it's in GEDCOM it's in FH. My prefere...

Re: Moving indiviuals between projects

Thanks Mike,
That's useful advice. I've opted for an unlinked tree, but I will probably use a named list as well, to help me find those unlinked individuals who share names with people in my main tree.

Moving individuals between projects

I have come across a text document that contains detailed information about some of my ancestors from the late 18th century. It has considerable detail (births, baptisms, marriages, etc), but no details of sources, other than a general statement that most of it came from parish and census records. M...

Seriously, although this is indeed for the technically minded, there are some interesting ideas in there which can inform all of us when we think about how to capture and record the huge number of different date formats we typically encounter in our research...

Re: Ancestor diagram for two siblings?

>> You cannot just add people at will in FH. But starting with an all relatives diagram you can hide people. I'm doing the research for my ancestors and my wife's, but our two children are, at least in my mind, the root of my tree, so I can see why this question arises. I have a collection of diagra...

Re: "Whole record" source citations missing

Thanks Mike,
It's so obvious now you've pointed it out. The galling thing is, I was a software engineer before I retired, and whenever anyone told me "I haven't changed anything" I was always suspicious. There's a lesson for me there, I think ...

Re: "Whole record" source citations missing

Thanks for quick response, Mike. Yes, I confirm I'm on FH 6.2.7. Here are the screenshots: First, the one with the missing citations: Screenshot1.png Secondly, the narrative report where the citations appear: Screenshot2.png The first two citations (1 and 2) are missing in the first case. I see that...

"Whole record" source citations missing

Have just rebuilt an Individual Summary Report for a named list of over 100 individuals before committing it to paper, and found that the source citations that refer to the whole record are missing. Citations that refer to specific facts are there. The citations come up just fine in a narrative repo...

Re: Fact type "event"

There is no reason in principle why you can't create a custom event, and call it "event" (I've just tried it), but in a case like yours, I would simply add a note. I think custom events are most useful when they are likely to crop up many times in a family.

Re: Controlling display of spouse boxes

After a bit of experimentation, I've concluded that whatever FH does to the formatting of these boxes depends upon whether they are above the root (ancestors and their siblings, cousins etc) or below (descendants - whose siblings are also descendants). Below the root, each branch behaves just like a...

Controlling display of spouse boxes

When I first create an All Relatives Diagram, spouse boxes appear for spouses who were not ancestors of the diagram root. This is what I would expect for ancestors who were married more than once. However, according to the help instructions, these boxes appear only when the Spouse Display Option is ...

Thanks Mike,
That has answered the question, and i can now beaver away with AS which will save a lot of time.
I did look at the knowledge base, but when I clicked "general settings" I couldn't see method 2 in the drop down menu, so I assumed the option should be set elsewhere.

AS Newbie question

I have decided to give AS a go, but I have hit a snag straight away, so I think I have missed something. I already have 8 census sources (one per year, from 1841 to 1911) in my FH project, with close on 700 citations. I would like to add new citations to the existing sources, but AS seems to insist ...
