Lost Parish Records

The recent Society of Genealogists did a feature on just this topic! It seems the Fire led to a period of consolidation and rationalisation of parishes. Wiki talks about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_churches_rebuilt_after_the_Great_Fire_of_London_but_since_demolished . The article...

How did you decide who to have as your Root Person

Normally me (I am the centre of my univers after all!), though obviously when sending bits to relatives that moves to them.

I also moved the root when working out relationships in a small village most of whome married cousins over three generations, just to track what was going on!

organizing files on hard drive

I may yet do that - I just feel that I want the relative addressing and everything else to work when I sync my structure to a USB drive and work from a laptop.

What I want is relative addressing to a master root (or a /media concept in UNIX).

Will keep playing until I get the effect I want!

organizing files on hard drive

On the subject of winmerge, I am using it to work out how exactly making a project in FH4 shuffles my media around from where I have it in FH3. I discover it has basically moved a few leaf nodes around I had in parallel and placed them all in a media node (which I also had for general media). Winmer...

In Europe Windows 7 is a full install only so it wipes the disc and you reinstall software (oh and back up data first!) As to sync-ing, I use a portable drive I sync from my desktop with SyncBackSE and use as a drive on the laptop opened direct from FH (and gedcom census). I then sync back to my des...

iphone app

Maybe a survey of how many people would use such a facility might be useful (which to some extent is what the wishlist is!)

I for one have no aims to by an iphone, and where do you draw the line (plus how many developers are there in Calico?)

record flags

I exported my diagram scheme from FH3 then re-imported in FH4 and all was well. I have around 25 possible flags in my diagram and it works fine.

I can only suggest rechecking how you set the rule up

Vista to XP

I have XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop. I control where FH and gedcom census work to suit me, rather than be dictated to by windows. I use syncback to copy my desktop set up to a memory stick (8Gb!) and on the laptop work from the memory stick as an external drive. So far no problems though ...

Linking two families

Before now, and to allow them to appear on the same diagram I have added in logical relatives with names such as XXXX, so in your case (if you know no more) I might add an XXX Ratcliff identified as the theoretical father of William and John. I know this is rather dodgy (and the may be cousins) but ...

Also if you tie records to other files (or take your file into a database) you wouldn't want to re-use numbers as it would invalidate any work you did elsewhere

Who should be included on a family Tree?

I think it all depends on what you want, you could maintain a big tree of all known direct and indirect relatives and split out more specific lines. I certainly have wandered fairly wide into 6th/7th cousins and then for spouses I might do their immediate family. I also keep all instances of a key s...

I just looked at Treeline that Jane mentions, again I think this is great if you know how your data is structured, but doesn't tell you what your structure should be

software for brainstorming?

I use One Note, it is great for scrap booking and string random pieces of data but you have to produce your own taxonmy (i.e. name all the tabs / pages). It is good for find all mentions of a piece of text bur doesn't do correlation/ complex queeries and so on. It is a great research filing tool tho...

software for brainstorming?

You could stifck it all in a database and write some queeries (I am toying with doing this to help wade through the records I capture from Parish Registers). Your requirement is more complex and probably would benefit from a visualisation tool. I am looking at something to allow geo-mapping of recor...

PS - I just re-read your post, RAID 1 can be slow if it is software (which may mean all data is written twice rather than with a more expensive controller) - what RAID device do you use?

How long does it take to open the gedcom file in notepad then save it back? It may be your configuration causing problems. Which RAID configuration did you use?

Click right in Property Box

Rather than locate the 'menu' button at the top, surely click right should bring up the menu as well?

This would make customisation a lot simpler

Export / Import Property Box Customisation

Although it looks like the file with the customisations is tucked away but locatable, it is in very different positions between XP and Vista and not simple for a non-techie user to keep two machines in sync. Can we have a simple routine from FH4 please? http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldisplay.php?...
