Re: media files saved as .gfif

I am certain this flaw has been introduced by one of the recent updates to Edge. The fix has been on various discussion groups for at least 3 years when Microsoft were claiming it was probably 3rd party software that caused the problem. Very unlikely in my case with my very narrow field of interests...

Re: media files saved as .gfif

With more research I have found that Edge is the culprit, saving graphics files in jfif format by default. You can apparently do a registry edit to get it to use jpeg but I have not tried that yet.

Re: media files saved as .gfif

Apologies. They come down as .jfif files and FH does not like it. I have not tried changing the extension as I don’t normally display them but re-saving directly without an extension as jpeg does not work because that does not change the name. I am on the latest update of Win11 and have felt for som...

media files saved as .gfif

Recently. when I download a file from Ancestry, although it says it is a jpeg, it saves it as xxx.gfif. This apparently is a standard format but FH does not recognise it. I can download the file, open it in Infranview and re-save it as .jpeg but this is a pain. Is there a way I can get Ancestry to s...

Re: Identifying several individuals from one source

Many thanks for these inputs, particularly from Nick, pointing out that I have been using Source Driven Data Input for years. Reviewing my past practice, I have used AS for censuses, creating birth records along the way, but tend to be a lumper for BMDs with references to the record in the Where wit...

Re: Identifying several individuals from one source

Thanks, Mike. Light is slowly creeping over the horizon. I am still at the stage of not really seeing the difference between Source Driven and Event Driven Data Entry. Whereas I thought that one piece of media could act as the source for several events, that piece of media is actually the starting p...

Re: Identifying several individuals from one source

Thanks, Jane. I did switch on Automatic Source Citation (which I have not used up to now) but that does not help as there is no DEA for newspapers. I had expected to see a dialogue something like AS, where there is a list of individuals. Select an individual and display the Events and attach a citat...

Identifying several individuals from one source

I have just moved to V7 and am slowly learning where to find things. ( Confession: I started on V3 and still prefer to work from the Records window, hardly ever using the Focus window.) This post chronicles how I have misunderstood at least one new feature. I decided to have a go at Source Driven Da...

Re: Launching FH in Win 11

Thanks for confirming this change in behaviour. I was beginning to think I had false memory syndrome. Clearly, MS have not implemented the Recent list on pinned items, though it does work in other locations. Perhaps it will come back some day on a minor upgrade.

Re: Launching FH in Win 11

Thanks, Adrian. Right-clicking on the desktop shortcut or the pinned entry in the Start menu just gives me the usual Windows options sush as unpinning, etc, but, following your hint, if I click on the icon in the taskbar, the Recent files are visible (and not just those opened since the upgrade). I ...

Launching FH in Win 11

In Win 10, when I right-clicked on the FH icon from the Start menu, I was given a choice of projects to open, which I found very handy. I have pinned FH to the Start menu in Win 11 but the right-click trick no longer works. Wouls it require action from Calico Pie to restore this function? (I have no...

Re: Ancestral Sources - Flag Support

You are too good to us, Nick. I was one of those who found expressions more difficult to use in order to add census icons to diagrams. It isn't just the need to learn some abstruse syntax. There are some practical difficulties. To use an expression, that expression needs to be able to look at someth...

Re: Including Region in a Census title

Ah! Thanks, Nick. Light dawns. I don't know enough about these scripts to create my own but I can usually follow what they try to do. I take it that {COUNTRY} is what is selected from the Region pull-down (incidentally, the associated tip says County) so that is just what I want. I had virtually dec...

Re: Record Flags, Icons and Diagrams

Thanks again. Your S&R plug-in is certainly a powerful piece of kit. It would do the job but the titles were generated in the format of Type-Year-Place-Ref No-Other Info, where Type is Census The plug-in would pick up the country in the Place entry and modify that. I don't think that would be ne...

Re: Including Region in a Census title

I am sorry, but I don’t know what this piece of code does. I want to show a census icon on diagrams. This used to be done using flags, and AS used to allow you to choose different flags for different regions. This has now been removed and we must use expressions to call up the icon, using the source...

Re: Record Flags, Icons and Diagrams

I have suggested on the AS forum that Nick consider adding the Region as selected from the pull-down menu to the default title, but with UK rather than the individual country so the the Title would be Census UK Year etc. I am now editing my existing census titles to this form. I have tried it and it...

Including Region in a Census title

I am trying to replace census flags with expressions. A difficulty is getting the expression to identify if the census is for the UK or, for example, Canada. Canada is easily identified as the census record title includes what has been entered in Place. However, I do not include United Kingdom in UK...

Re: Record Flags, Icons and Diagrams

Thanks, Mike. I had tried to find a relevant discussion but wasn't bright enough to get the exact form of words needed. I see what is required but I don't think it is going to be easy. AS creates a title from an amalgamation of Type, Place, Ref ID (which includes the year from the pull-down menu) an...

Re: Record Flags, Icons and Diagrams

If I may jump in here, I, too, have been trying to catch up with the idea of doing away with census flags. (I know expressions have been available for years, but, when they were introduced, they were thought to be for advanced or techie users. I think they were not wrong in that.) I have successfull...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests

Having now identified at least 5 DNA groups, I've found it to be too much hassle to try to differentiate each one on a diagram. I have therefore used the data ref %INDI.CAST% as a boolean value. If it is present, the individual's box is outlined in red. This shows up clearly in the diagrams and show...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests

Thanks, Mike. I'll give that a go. I have now added more groups (with more descriptive names) and it is working OK. I have had multiple matches from Ancestry, some useless as there are no trees, some frustrating because the trees don't go far enough or lack detail, and some which are very strong but...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests

I am experimenting with using the Group/Caste attribute. I have created a group, DNA Group 1, and given this attribute to the common ancestors, then copied it to the next descendant in turn, ending up at the person to whom I am matched. I have also initially added this attribute to my ancestors back...

Ancestry DNA tests

My wife and I have been given DNA test kits as a gift. We have submitted these and now received notices of "hits" from Ancestry, mostly at 4th cousin level or greater. In most cases, I was not aware of these people and they certainly did not appear in the abbreviated trees we have on Ances...

Re: Deleting a duff query

Thank you, Mike. I must improve my searching of the Knowledge Base as that link didn't turn up. Delete didn't work from the Query window as FH would not load the file. I didn't know about the View menu link, but that worked. You are probably right about my attempt to delete the file. FH was open at ...

Deleting a duff query

Some time ago I created a custon query (How_related, note the underscore), possibly by modifying sombody else's. For some time now, possibly after an upgrade, FH started telling me that it was not a standard FH file. I then loaded the "How Related" query from the knowledge base which, of c...
