Re: Ancestry DNA tests
Having now identified at least 5 DNA groups, I've found it to be too much hassle to try to differentiate each one on a diagram. I have therefore used the data ref %INDI.CAST% as a boolean value. If it is present, the individual's box is outlined in red. This shows up clearly in the diagrams and show...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests
Thanks, Mike. I'll give that a go. I have now added more groups (with more descriptive names) and it is working OK. I have had multiple matches from Ancestry, some useless as there are no trees, some frustrating because the trees don't go far enough or lack detail, and some which are very strong but...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests
I am experimenting with using the Group/Caste attribute. I have created a group, DNA Group 1, and given this attribute to the common ancestors, then copied it to the next descendant in turn, ending up at the person to whom I am matched. I have also initially added this attribute to my ancestors back...

Ancestry DNA tests
My wife and I have been given DNA test kits as a gift. We have submitted these and now received notices of "hits" from Ancestry, mostly at 4th cousin level or greater. In most cases, I was not aware of these people and they certainly did not appear in the abbreviated trees we have on Ancestry so the...

Re: Deleting a duff query
Thank you, Mike. I must improve my searching of the Knowledge Base as that link didn't turn up. Delete didn't work from the Query window as FH would not load the file. I didn't know about the View menu link, but that worked. You are probably right about my attempt to delete the file. FH was open at ...

Deleting a duff query
Some time ago I created a custon query (How_related, note the underscore), possibly by modifying sombody else's. For some time now, possibly after an upgrade, FH started telling me that it was not a standard FH file. I then loaded the "How Related" query from the knowledge base which, of course, wor...

Re: 6.2.6 Released
I have just applied the update but my antivirus would not let it re-start as it thinks fh.exe is dangerous. I have got past it by excluding fh.exe from virus checks but this is not really acceptable. I seem to remember this problem cropping up some years ago. I am using F-secure and it is the Deep G...

Re: Not re-starting after using AS
Thanks for your input, Mike. Sorry about the confusion on version numbers. I am on FH 6.2.5 and AS 5.2.0. I managed to transpose the version number of the plug-in from 4.6 to 6.4. Things may be settling down. I did another census, this time with AS on top of the Records window. When it came to re-st...

Re: Not re-starting after using AS
Further info: I just did another census entry. This time, I minimised FH before completing the AS entry. I got the reload question as usual and clicked Yes. The FH icon remained in the task bar and when I clicked on it, it came up OK. So, the rogue behaviour occurs when I am using AS in front of the...

Not re-starting after using AS
For the last couple of days, when I use AS for census entries, the program has failed to restart once AS has done its job. AS shuts down and, on the FH records screen (which is the one I use for data entry), I get the usual message about the file having been updated and do I want to re-load. When I ...

Re: Exporting to Ancestry
Thanks, Jane. I'll warn my friend. Ideally, he'd buy FH. Mike. Oops! I did not see that warning. Problem probably solved. In addition, my friend has just held his hand up. The unconverted file was complete after all! But I'll use the plug-in again, properly this time, and re-send the files. Thanks f...

Re: Exporting to Ancestry
I certainly viewed the converted file. FH then asked the usual word-wrapping question then verified the file. On closing it asked me if I wanted to save the changes. I did not realize this would destroy the formatting. Perhaps we need a warning here. I'll try the process again, sending the export fi...

Re: Exporting to Ancestry
The raw file works perfectly in FH. I can re-create the chart I used to create the file - if I ask for a descendants file from the grandfather. If I ask for an ancestors file from one of the grandsons, of course I only see five people, his parents and one set of grandparents. I wonder if my relative...

Exporting to Ancestry
I am trying to send a branch of my tree to a relative. My own tree was created exclusively on FH and I extracted the branch by creating a chart, filling a list from the chart, and exporting a Gedcom using the list. I then took the branch and used the plug-in to create an export file, using the ANC o...

Thanks for this thread. I also had difficulty locating the Change Password option. A small point - you must enter your old password when changing to a new one, not just for changing username or e-mail as implied in the dialogue.

Thanks, Nick. I agree that 'fairly serious' was OTT - and it was my fault that I didn't get the warning message. I had the census date wrong. D'oh!

Census templates
I've had a go at creating a Scottish template for 1841. I can't accomplish my target of reproducing the form exactly because several columns are sub-divided and AS can't cater for that. (And it certainly isn't worth the trouble to make it do that!) I can get the important details in but there is a f...

Census templates
I'll see if my old brain can cope with creating a Scottish template at least. I would add that I do not normally have a census image as most of the data I have gathered comes either from FreeCEN or Ancestry, both of which are transcripts of the data. For Scottish censuses, you only get the census im...

Minor formatting error
You are correct, Nick. I have the DPI set to 120 on a screen resolution of 1920x1080. This is a big desktop but my old eyes can't cope with the small font. I'll live with the overlap.

Census templates
I am only just finding my way through this aspect of AS but am I correct in thinking that the templates apply to the English census forms only? For instance, in 1841, the options for the Born in County column will differ. Y(es) means born in the county, and that will apply throughout the UK, but N(o...

On the main window, the field title, Census Country:, overlaps the input box so that, for example, the U in UK is obscured.

Custom Tree Splitter
One thing I would add to this is that, having split the file, you should display Families. You will probably find a number of families at the end of the tree. This is because FH retains the marriage even though the participants have been deleted. Delete these families and the split file will be much...

Bad practice in Merges
I post this as a warning to others who may be as dim as myself. When merging two files, make sure you check the merges on all the tabs, including Sources. I had thought that, when checking the matching records for individuals, the census entries you see are references to the sources. They aren't. Th...

re ';Married too young'; download
I had a bit of worry on this account until I was informed, from an impeccable source, that, in Scotland, until as late as 1929, the legal age for marriage was 14 for a boy and 12 for a girl.
