Re: Can I update AS v5.2 to v7.2? and about FH7

Hi

Just download 7.2 to your downloads as usual and install it and it should just automatically upgrade you from 5.2. If you've made your own templates then these should still work but may be a good idea to make a copy of the Ancestral Sources\Settings folder in your Documents folder.

Cheers

Re: Main Tab Configuration

I wouldn't bother with the image as it's not an image of a 'real source' (if you know what I mean) and doesn't give you any more information than just recording the reference ID in the local note. Yes this is a 'lumper' (method 2) approach which seems most appropriate for registration records as the...

Re: Main Tab Configuration

I feel like I'm having to work hard to defend something that I think AS does a good job with - it offers to replace the fact or create an additional one and it allows you to retain existing citations/images/notes/witnesses if you wish.

Re: Main Tab Configuration

When the Birth Event gets updated via AS with the Birth Certificate exact Date and Place, the GRO Index details are superfluous but are usually included in the Birth Certificate Source Citation or retained in the GRO Birth Index Source Citation. Actually usually they are not retained, unless you ch...

Re: AS Error Message: Data Entry 4.9

I agree it's probably too late to change the name now. I think the problem is that when people install it (and AS) they know what they're doing but a few months down the line some people forget the distinction between the two and get confused. Perhaps the message about a new version could say someth...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

Sounds great. So it isn't practical yet but one day you'll be able to ditch AS and use the DEAs instead.

Re: AS Error Message: Data Entry 4.9

BEJ, many people do -- it isn't the clearest of distinctions. I've often thought the plugin should be renamed 'Launch Ancestral Sources' for clarity. Yes this would be very helpful as I do have to field a lot of questions about this and also some people think Ancestral Sources was created by the wo...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

Recording sources and record citations are two different operations, which I believe is the concept behind FH7's source-driven data entry. I can prepare a source. Then later create citations to that source. Yep that's the FH way so if you like working that way, do it that way and don't use AS. The ...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

There is another practical option. You could prepare the source/citation in FH, if that's your preference, and then use a Data Entry Assistant to generate the facts citations etc. They aren't as mature as AS, but may fit your need, and more will become available with time. I said " There are an inf...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

I find it easier to create Prepared Sources in FH7. Is it possible to access a FH7 Prepared Source from Ancestral Sources? Assuming I understand your question - a prepared source in FH7 is just a page of text (perhaps with tables, etc.) that you can fill in and of course that's easy to do, but what...

Re: Main Tab Configuration

Just to reinforce Mike's suggestion... I just have a single source in Family Historian for GRO Indexes (but could equally have 3 for the 3 types). Then if all I have is a Birth registration record (for example) then I just create a birth fact with the date (e.g. Q3 1890) and put the GRO reference in...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

No it isn't possible for AS to preview them, but the footnotes, etc. should display correctly in FH when the source is viewed in FH after it's been created by AS.

Re: FH V7 Note record Text allows Source citation error?

I wasn't missing the point thank you. I wasn't interested in how it was recorded in the Gedcom and didn't mention that at all because it is clearly an FH specific tag and how CP decide to record it is up to them, my comments were entirely based on the interface and what the point of allowing this is...

Re: FH V7 Note record Text allows Source citation error?

Well possibly, but it's a massive stretch. I only really responded to this so Mike didn't think we were ignoring him :) - it causes no issues at all for me having this feature there as I certainly won't be using it although I suppose a user might accidentally link a citation to the text rather than ...

Re: FH V7 Note record Text allows Source citation error?

But unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't think it's possible to have a source for part of the text. The text is the note, and the note is the text. They are the same thing. I don't think the analogy with an individual record works: a Source for an individual record makes sense because an i...

Re: FH V7 Note record Text allows Source citation error?

Well I think a note record can only have one text field so if there was more than one source citation they could be added to the note itself, I can't see a reason to add a source to the text field.

Re: FH V7 Note record Text allows Source citation error?

I agree that this seems a bit odd - you can have a source for the note record so it seems odd that you would also have a potentially different source for the text within the note because really there isn't anything else in a note record of any use except the text. I don't know if it's a bug or by de...

Re: Enter Reference ID warning...

I strongly recommend you should use the Ref ID box for your reference/citation rather than the 'Other Info', there's no reason I can think of to use the Other Info instead. If you would prefer AS to not automatically fill in the start of the Reference ID then go to the Options (under the Tools menu)...

Re: think this is an ancestral sources question

I used to format the text in AS after copying it from FMP etc. Now I just copy the text to AS to allow me to fill in the appropriate fields in AS, complete AS, and then I reopen the source text in FH7 and copy the text again from FMP. It is beautifully tabulated in FH! Does the FMP transcript inclu...

And is there a way of making sure that everyone mentioned in the census entry has the full transcript in their notes? At the moment I am copying and pasting, which is a bit of a chore when there are big households. Thanks Janine I'm not really sure why you would want to do this? The transcript is i...

Re: think this is an ancestral sources question

Hi Janine As Mike says, the fundamental way that AS records the data hasn't changed even since the earlier 'Census only' version from 2004. It creates the various facts (census, occupation, birth, etc.) for each individual and then links them via a citation to a source which includes a transcript of...

Re: Duplicate Sources

AS won't delete sources. It will offer to replace the main fact (e.g. Census) but not other facts such as occupation (unless the place/address/date match exactly I think) and the existing source will remain. It would be risky for AS to offer to delete sources as even asking the question of the user ...

Re: Hiding occupations

When you record an occupation (and other data) in AS you do need to be considering this kind of thing - Widow is not an occupation. If you don't want the occupation to be recorded as a fact then don't enter it into the occupation box in AS and just edit the source text at the bottom to show this in ...

Re: Copying and pasting incomplete

Ah that's a relief - I released 7.2.7 a few days ago but wanted to just check there weren't any 'show stopper' errors reported before I activated the update notification across all the hundreds of current users.

All the best

Re: Copying and pasting incomplete

Well yes and that's why I took Open Office out of the equation and asked for them to copy and paste from Family Historian. It 'feels' as if they're not using v7.2.7 but they said they were when I asked yesterday.
