Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
AS is generally about recording sources that refer to individuals in your family historian project. You may of course have occasional people in sources that you record with AS where you don't create them as individuals such as marriage witnesses or lodgers in a census, etc. but that will usually be ...

Re: Weekly email of forum topics
Presumably the cron job is running a routine that then sends the emails. Is it possible that this routine is set to restart if it times out (or something like that) and for some reason it timed out twice today?

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
I know that I'm late to the party! This would be a great addition to AS, but I'm hoping that it will be able to accommodate the tomb-style memorials which often have inscriptions on each side (of which I have several). Perhaps there could be an option to "Add Another" to allow the panels ...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
If a gravestone has 'Here lies the body of'. Then the source is saying that they were buried there. So quite reasonably this can lead to a burial fact being created with the place/address recorded. As I said the estimated date would be optional. People record data in different ways, just because you...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
One of the things about 'standard' graves for people who are actually buried beneath is that usually the inscription has a date of death, not burial. So the way AS will handle this I think is to offer to generate a burial fact which will have the Place/Address as the graveyard with an option to esti...

I've not seen any options to send pms. I have been sent many emails over the years through the Fhug facility but never a pm as far as I remember.

Re: AS v7.8.6 and Crossover install
I've just checked and this procedure for setting the tab colours was in AS from at least version 5 in 2014 and probably for longer than that so it isn't something new.

Re: AS v7.8.6 and Crossover install
This is related to the tab control that is displayed on the main screen for the non-census source types where it has Main Info, Residence, etc. The standard .net framework winforms tab control doesn't allow the tabs to have a colour to match the rest of the control so they look really odd. So the ro...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
Yes. It would be easy to create a duplicate entry in the Source_Citation when creating the events associated with the source. I do this for any source be it a census, church record, newspaper article, etc. To help with keeping the actual information from the source together I usually generate a sha...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
Just as a follow up Nick on my 'Memorial' fact - this came about because I found that there are occasions when a person is mentioned on a Gravestone but there is no 'proof' that the person is actually buried in that cemetery, or I actually know that the person is buried elsewhere (a prime example h...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
Thanks for the responses so far. It appears that Monumental Inscription is a generally acceptable name. There are a number of different opinions regarding the Date field on the source template but I am inclined to go with the idea of the date being filled in by default only if there is just one pers...

Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?
Dear all I'm working on the next source type to be supported by Ancestral Sources - Monumental Inscriptions and had some points I'd appreciate opinions on. Firstly I've currently decided to call the source type 'Monumental Inscriptions'. They are often referred to as MIs in family history books and ...

Re: Marriage record id
The way I see it is that there are effectively 4 views of your data available in FH, not counting queries and reports. In the initial versions of Family Historian the records view was the main view and this allows access to all fields, all the data. However, this wasn't a very friendly interface for...

Re: Source type issue
Hi Colin
AS has always by default created 1939 register sources with type 'Register'. There was a post last October that explained how to get AS to change the source type to be 1939 Register so I expect you must have used a setting like that.
Cheers
Nick

Just to mention that I am actively working on the two source types for Ancestral Sources: gravestones (MIs) and probate and making good progress now (particularly gravestones) but it will be much later in the year before these are likely to appear I think.

Yes I agree, this was a very helpful and interesting post from Mark.HeatherARobertson wrote: ↑26 Mar 2024 20:19 This was a fantastic tip from the above poster! Never thought of doing this, just tried it and it works perfectly. So glad I came across this post.

I agree Adrian, the terminology doesn't really matter at all. However in case you find it of interest.... The reason why I believe Ancestral Sources is a 'source driven' approach is that you are entering the details of the source, effectively transcribing the source in AS, and from that all the fac...

Re: Adding Media files.
Can I ask BillH and Nick when they developed the muscle memory for fact driven data entry in FH? Also was there no alternative when they did? The key point is that 99% of the sources I enter are birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial and Census and I enter those with AS. I could turn this round an...

Re: Adding Media files.
For the documents that AS doesn't handle for me - for example gravestones, obituaries, etc. - I create the fact first - let's say a burial fact based on an obituary. Then with that fact selected in the property box, I click the "Add Citation" in the sources box at the bottom of the screen...

Please could you explain what benefit you gain by linking a census image to the fact given that from the facts tab as it's only three clicks to select the fact, open the media pane on the citation and open the image in the Editor/player? I just mean that when the rich-text is ready, just before you click save, you could highlight the text and copy it (Ctrl+C or right-click context menu) and then paste it into the rich text (Ctrl+V or right-click context menu).
