Re: FH7 on Linux?

Dear Neil, It's not the FH7 data that concerns me. I publish it myself (see https://genarchives.com/NineGenerations/up/index.htm[/url]). It's everything else: e-mail, my Quicken data, my other interests, my political views and discussions. They are somehow gathering information like that. Advertise...

Re: Origin of 'Generic Type' in Source Records tab?

I think the idea in FH is that when using Templated Sources the type field isn't used. AS is probably a bit 'naughty' continuing to put data into the field but it doesn't do any harm as far as I'm aware. There is an AS setting under Census, Baptism, etc. where you can turn off the recording of the s...

Re: Source Generic > Template

If you use Ancestral Sources there is a process to help to convert Census method 1 generic sources into templated sources if you've set up the templated sources element of AS. It's part of the same Census Source Conversion screen in AS that can be used to convert plain text source text to rich text.

Re: 'default GEDCOM file doesn't exist' error

Just to follow up on this: I have liaised with Wanda and the issue is now resolved. The problem was that there wasn't a designated 'Documents' folder on her computer, the existing documents folder having been moved. When first run, AS checks the location of the documents folder and creates a setting...

Re: FMP starting to add mother's maiden name to pre 1911 births

but nevertheless some much older Scottish baptism registers do helpfully include the mother's maiden name. I seem to remember that some of the 18th century 'Dade' baptism registers in Cheshire that my family appear in include the mother's maiden name (and the names, occupations and abode of her par...

Re: 'default GEDCOM file doesn't exist' error

There must be something on your PC that is stopping AS from functioning so that's difficult to trouble shoot... Can you look at the event logs on your computer. Try running AS again and In the Applications event log, see if there is a corresponding error. Can you also look at Task Manager on your co...

Re: 'default GEDCOM file doesn't exist' error

I do find this very strange as I can't see how the program could just end following that message without displaying a further error message, I wonder if something isn't quite right with how your documents folder has been redirected. Ideally I'd like to spend time with you working through this slowly...

Re: 'default GEDCOM file doesn't exist' error

So just to clarify, do you mean that the "log file does not exist" message appears, and then you press OK and nothing at all happens afterwards? No other message boxes appear and the main Ancestral Sources screen doesn't appear at all? If so then I can't understand how that could happen. I...

Re: Installing FH under virtual machine on a Mac

I believe the issue must be something to do with the way Table functionality has been programmed in FH7, as the 'normal' Table functions implemented in the various Word/Text processors I have tested under Crossover; and also in native WINE installations on Linux VMs, have worked without the need fo...

Re: How to relocate AS settings, logs & backup directories

I would copy your existing Ancestral Sources folder (with the 3 sub folders) from your current location to where you want it to be. Then in AS in the options screen, update the paths of the 3 folders to point at the new locations. Then close AS and when you reopen it should be using the new folders.

Re: Custom Icon bar/tool bar

I've been surprised that an option for adding a plugin as a toolbar icon hasn't appeared over the years as it seems such an obvious thing to allow and the plugins are relatively hidden away currently so I agree that this should be a wish-list item.

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

John, with due respect, this is not the thread to post that problem. I have deliberately not taken much part in this discussion to see where it went without influencing it. Compared to the thousands of downloads for my plugin the number of users reporting being confused is tiny. There does not seem...

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

I thought it likely that they were somewhere, but guess that’s what happens when information is in two different places. I searched the actual AS help file and didn’t find any reference to them, but didn’t search the KB. It’s still worth tabulating them in one place and describing the simple plugin...

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

I have already created a desktop shortcut to load AS with my main project. I assume this is because you normally want AS to load without your main project because of course you can use the 'Current Project is Default' option in the File menu to specify the project you're using should always load up...

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

For the record, IIRC correctly it was Nick that asked for the support for multiple versions of AS ( 19021|Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin for multi-installed AS ). You have to be able to start the programme for it to check for anything, so it seems sensible to do it outside AS if it is required...

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

I've never used the plugin either but I think probably the main benefit is that it ensures the user is opening the correct project in AS. I guess if you're regularly swapping between projects in Family Historian this could be useful.

Re: A new Ancestral Sources launcher...?

3. I am not a fan of plugins checking the plugin store for later versions and displaying a popup, which I find distracting, especially as it will do it every time the plugin is invoked. I normally remove the lines of code in the VersionInStore / CheckVersionInStore functions to stop this behaviour,...

Re: FH tools menu

It has always been a frustration to me that the plugin wasn't given a better name (e.g. Launcher for Ancestral Sources). Too many people get confused and think that the plugin is Ancestral Sources and that AS is Mike's creation.

As far as I'm aware it does display the surname for males. I tried in an autotext template and a source template and it populated in both.

Re: Question about burial surname change by A.S.

Yes that's right. The main purpose for the Keywords is to generate transcriptions using the auto-text templates and in the transcriptions the names are likely to be their married names. If you need the names to be their maiden name then use the {KEYPERSON.SN_ORIGINAL} or {KEYPERSON.SN_ORIGINAL_CAPS}.

Re: Full ages on certs

I have no explanation for that! The only thing I can think of is that the greater than character being entered isn't the same as the > character normally entered. Are you running AS on a Windows PC or under emulation (or similar) on a Mac?
