Re: Sources, Citations and Methods for Census Households

There is no problem at all with including two households in one entry, other than perhaps consistency with your other census records. Once AS has saved your entry and created the facts, sources, multimedia records, etc. then you can do what you like with them in FH, including adding addition notes, ...

Re: age on marriage cert recorded as "full"

Tatewise posted his reply (which makes the same suggestion) seconds before I posted this. This is why I rarely bother replying to posts nowadays - he always beats me to it :) When you enter information with Ancestral Sources, if you require a transcription of exactly what is on a certificate or cen...

Re: Census Entry: Witness or Not?

What you say about needing to make 10 amendments if you need to alter something about a 10 person census form is perfectly correct....that's the Data Analyst in me speaking. Yeah, I almost mentioned in the original post about the downside of de-normalized data ;) I just wanted to jump in here and m...

Re: Ancestral Sources & Family Historian 5

Bit Defender is just being cautious, quite rightly, because Ancestral Sources doesn't have a software certificate to prove who it has been created by. Last time I investigated purchasing a certificate it cost over £100 a year to do so, which I didn't really feel I wanted to pay for what is effective...

Re: Occupation missing from Census tab

Hi Brian Yes the templates are in the Ancestral Sources folder in your Documents folder in a file called settings.xml. When you're adding census entries and you choose the country I'm guessing that you have UK and U.K. in that list. If you choose UK rather than U.K. then it will probably work using ...

Re: Occupation missing from Census tab

Brian I found a rootsweb FHU email thread from January 2015 where you asked if there was a way that you could append the occupation to the census fact in Ancestral Sources rather than use Occupation and Mike Tate (Tatewise) explained: "Essentially you must change the Occupation column item for ...

Re: Occupation missing from Census tab

Hi Brian So when the entry was created for Cornelius, presumably you went into Family Historian and edited the note in the census record to say 'occupation shown as labourer'. I would have expected to see an individual Fact for occupation in your list too - are you deleting that as part of the proce...

Re: Occupation missing from Census tab

Hi Brian I'm wondering if you've updated the census templates in AS so that occupation isn't saved as a fact but is instead added to the census fact as a note. This isn't something I'd ever recommend but would explain why the occupations aren't showing up. Do you remember doing that? If you look at ...

Re: Banns

I suspect you're right Helen - I had a dig through my recent Marriage sources and the one that mentioned was indeed a combination of 2 banns records and a marriage record that I found as the result of a single search on Lancashire OPC. I just combined them as one marriage source. I haven't ever reco...

Re: Banns

I don't think it's likely that I would build in a mechanism to allow an entry to be made that generates multiple sources. It just doesn't really fit in with the mechanisms that AS uses. I could envisage adding functionality to the marriage entry facility to allow the dates of banns to be recorded if...

Re: Ancestral Sources v5.2 Font Size

If Ancestral Sources is maximised and the fonts are too big, some text and buttons won't be displayed properly and scroll bars won't currently appear on most screens to help you with this. Generally users who have set their Windows display settings to 175% or more (I assume you've done this?) would ...

Thanks for letting me know about this: it looks like my hosting provider had a temporary issue this morning but things seem to be back up and running now.

Cheers

Re: Child wrongly identified in census

Although a mistake seems most likely, might it be possible that this Frances (female) died shortly after the census and a new baby boy was born soon afterwards and named Francis? There would only be a couple of years difference in age. It might be worth looking at the indexes for BMD to see if this ...

Victor, in File Explorer if you right-click on a zip file and then select Open With... then you can select File Explorer and tick the box to always use this to open zip files. Then you should find that zip folders open in File Explorer rather than WinZip.

Mike replied while I was answering this post but I've posted it anyway in case it helps! A project is effectively a set of folders that includes the GEDCOM family history text file and your photos (there can be other files too but I'm ignoring those as they don't help with this answer!). The GEDCOM ...

Ah I see what you mean. The window you're referring to isn't a digest of the information you've entered. It is just offering to retain the information you've entered for the next entry. The idea being that if you were, for example, entering a lot of death certificates for the same place and with the...

Re: Adding parent then makes them the focus

Ah OK this was a bug! It was because of the check box 'Add to Entry' being ticked, but the checkbox isn't meant to apply to anything other than census entry types which is why it isn't visible. But it is invisible and ticked so it always adds a new person. The next version will work as expect...

Re: Adding parent then makes them the focus

There is a quite logical reason for this and it isn't a bug, even though I agree the process ought to be changed to avoid confusion. You have the 'Add to Entry following creation of individual' ticked and that always adds the person you've added to the currently open tab - it is the equivalent of ad...

Re: Modifying Baptism Template for Further Info - Ref ID:

As a workaround, you could put this as the first line of your auto-text template so that the majority of the text can be automatically created including address and year. Then you could then tweak this as required and copy and paste this into the reference ID just before you save (and as you said it...

Re: Citations - is there a correct way?

Of course most people are consistently inconsistent, so a Census lumper may be a Birth record splitter, and so on. TMG doesn't care or force you into any 'method'. Yes I agree. I prefer method 1 (splitting) but if all I have as a citation for a birth is a GRO reference I use method 2 (lumping). If ...
