Select both spouse boxes then use View > Properties... or right-click Properties... or Alt+Enter. I find that simply selecting both boxes is enough to switch the Property box to the Family record. No need to use any of the extra steps suggested by Mike. With regard to the first question, I use diag...

Re: Great or Grand?

Thanks Mervyn. Ancestry are of course taking a US-centric view, but from what Bill said earlier ( “a Great-Aunt would be my Grandfather's or Grandmother's sister” ) many people in the US use the same system as the UK. So, perhaps we might have to accept that there is no universally correct answer, j...

Re: Great or Grand?

We all seem to be in broad agreement, apart from Ancestry! The passage Bob quoted from Ancestry says that According to genealogists, great-aunt is then supposed to be used for relatives who are three generations older than you or more. So, your great-grandmother or great-grandfather’s sister is your...

I have not found a good logical reason why my grand-parents' siblings should not be referred to as my grand-aunts or uncles. Can anyone help us understand this a little better? At present if you have one or several external or network drives attached Family Historian will search them all so do exactly as John suggested and MOVE the folder rather than copy otherwise FH will still find the original file paths. Re: Renaming a Media Sub-Folder

Yes, using Tools > External file Links > Auto Repair Links will repair all the links automatically (provided the file names themselves have not changed). You don't need to do one at a time. Another method is to use Tools > External File Links and locate the old name of the sub-folder in the list, th...

Re: Recording Convict records

Another approach, useful if you want a narrative report to flow easily, is to use notes to summarise some of the subsidiary details instead of creating numerous separate facts. I do use a custom ‘Criminal Conviction’ fact to record the initial offence and the judgement, and another ‘Transportation’ ...

Re: Registration Districts?

This is a bit off-topic but for England and Wales marriages which took place in an Anglican church there is a technique for working out which church it was, based on the information in the index. This enables precise recording of the location, not just the RD, without the need to order a certificate...

Re: Registration Districts?

Further to John's point, even if you do know the sub-district, finding out the exact location of the office (which has probably moved a few times over the years) is difficult, therefore it probably can't be 'pinpoint geocoded'. Anyway, that approach means creating a separate registration fact for th...

John, that message is about Mike's Ancestral Sources Data Entry plugin which can be used to launch the Ancestral sources program itself. The plugin is not the AS program. Remember also that mother's maiden name is only relevant from 1837 onwards Has no bearing on record in the 300 years before that You are referring specifically to England and Wales (which admittedly this thread was about when it started 6 years ago. It has drifted off topic). Just to be clear, thos...

My nephew was baptised privately in the 1960s...It was just the family in our local Methodist church, I’m not familiar with the terminology in the Methodist Church, but the distinction between a private and public baptism in the Church of England, as recorded in parish registers, is not a question ...

Re: Allow Report sentences to recognise Individuals who are Living.

I have now realised that there is a problem with the “… was/were born to…” format. It would be completely wrong in cases of adoption, where Fred Blogs and Mary Smith are the adopting parents. Admittedly even the “had the following children“ format is slightly misleading but is sufficiently ambiguous...

Re: Allow Report sentences to recognise Individuals who are Living.

That still doesn’t work if one of the parents is alive and the other is not. Nor does it work if one of the children has died. “The following children were born to Fred Blogs and Mary Smith” is the best I can come up with, as it has no implications about whether all or any of them are still living. ...

Re: Allow Report sentences to recognise Individuals who are Living.

When child facts do exist then the report wording is "He and Mary Smith had the following children:" which can be wrong on two counts. 1) If the parents are alive it should say "have" not "had". 2) If there is only one child it should say "child" not "ch...

This seems a reasonable request but I don’t know how easy it would be to implement, or whether CP would feel it worth their while as there are ways round the problem. As far as I know (I stand to be corrected) the format "Joe Bloggs was the son of Fred Bloggs and Mary Smith" only arises if...
