Re: Ancestor Chart Format - lines to repeated ancestors
Yes, with the diagram open use Diagram > Options > Genera l tab and untick Check for Duplicates . If you want this to be the default, tick Remember Options at the bottom left. Incidentally if you leave the Check for Duplicates box ticked but click Options next to it and then click Help in the next w...

If you click on any of the small squares to the left it will collapse the corresponding branch. To collapse them all, click on the top one (next to Hannah Lathrop in your example). Is that what you mean? Clicking the button again will expand the branch(es) to whatever state they were in when when yo...

Re: 'Standardized Version' of Place Names
Yes, if you plan to do all geocoding manually it's safest to uncheck the Enable Auto-Geocoding option. The alternative is to leave it enabled but mark Auto-geocodes as Tentative. I sometimes find the auto-coding a useful staring point, even though it is sometimes way out. If the auto-coding is marke...

You don't have to create the new Named List first, although admittedly the section in the Knowledge Base under 'Adding Records to a List' suggests that you do. (Perhaps this should be clarified.) You can just select the records you want to add to the list and then use Edit > Add to Named List. You w...

.... I think also some naming conventions may want to inhibit the default surnames when adding children - again as part of an "Internationalisation preference". This is easily done via Tools > Preferences > General tab > Insert likely surname when adding children or fathers. (Apologies if you are a...

Re: Missing child facts in property box FACTS tab
Wayne, the important thing to remember if you opt to display timeline facts in an individual's Facts tab is that they are just that - Timeline facts. They are displayed in chronological order to give an overall picture of the sequence of family-related events in the individual's life. Open the Selec...

Re: Given Name Used
One of my favourite name muddles comes from a relative known as Roy. Roy was actually short for Pomeroy, which was his third given name. His first given name was Lord. Honestly. His full name was Lord George Pomeroy Colley. It was said that he was named after General Sir (not Lord) George Pomeroy Co...

Re: Given Name Used
Yes, I could fill several pages with similar examples! Another thing which bothers me is that it's not clear whether (in FH terms) a diminutive name, such as Ted or Vicky, should be recorded as a nickname. It's really just a variant of a given name, whereas a nickname is often quite unrelated to the...

Re: Questions from TMG Refugee
I’m not familiar with TMG but Linda talks about “locations in Source documents” and in Carl’s case he says a URL was “Cited in the Source”. I don’t know whether these are fields in the TMG Source itself or in a Citation (equivalent to “where within” in FH) but it sounds as if an import to FH ought t...

Re: Questions from TMG Refugee
I checked in TMG, and these were all references within source citations..... Linda Reinfeld described the same problem in her post, when she said: FH regards locations in source documents as locations, i.e. if a source element comes from the location group FH treats it just like a place in a tag. I...

I think this might actually be what John was originally asking for when he referred to a "down arrow", because he went on to say "..... as most people in a family at the census were born at the same place? Saves a lot of duplicate typing or copying and pasting."

Sorry the underscore was a typo.

I noticed when I clicked on the heading Relationship to Root, by mistake, the relationships disappeared. That is my problem, getting them back. That's because when the column is sorted alphabetically any 'blank' relationships will be sorted at the beginning. It could be argued that they should be s...

Hello Jean, To add briefly to Mike’s reply, as you have mentioned diagrams I wonder whether you are confusing a Diagram Root with a File Root . You can select any person in your file as the ‘root’ of any type of diagram so that it will display that person’s ancestors or descendants or both, or all t...

Re: Adding text to a diagram
It may have been set up this way so that it is consistent with the behaviour of other elements of a diagram. For inserted lines, shapes and pictues, as well as text boxes, a single right-click opens a menu of options, one of which is Format, and a double click opens a Format dialog directly. Similar...

Re: Adding text to a diagram
After inserting the box you need to right-click in it and choose Format (or just double-click in the box). You can then type text in the Text tab, as well as choose the font and size of text, alignment and margins.
