Re: Using and displaying Places

I can still find him using a Query for Londoners, by making sure the Query looks for London not just in the RESI.PLAC field but also in OCCU.PLAC (and other *.PLAC fields). By the way, you don't need to write your own query for this. In Tools>Work with Data>Places select the place you are intereste...

Re: Using and displaying Places

In the example you give, the man who was apprenticed in London would have lived near his work so it's safe to record London as his residence. But bear in mind that the place where someone carries out their occupation is not always the place where they live. This is less of a problem with historical ...

Re: Change map locator symbol

Coming to this discussion late, I am a bit surprised at the confusion. The slide bar and the mouse wheel do different things, both of which are useful. As Jane says, if you use the mouse wheel it will zoom in to the point where you have positioned the mouse on the map. If you use the slide bar it zo...

Re: Adding all spouses in a gedcom for export

Yes, start with a small modification to the standard Descendants query. Open the Query window, select that query, then click the cog icon and select Save as Custom Query . Call it ' Descendants with spouses '. Now in this new Custom query on the Rows tab tick the Inc spouses of relatives box, bottom...

The all tab for the child’s record only shows his birth and not the mother’s death You can adjust the Timeline options to show the mother's death in the child's Property Box if you want to. On the Facts tab of the Property Box click the 'cog' icon at the right hand end of the toolbar and choose Tim...

Re: importing data from non Gedcom

I can't remember what the backup options were in V3 but as Bill says, if you have a zipped backup of the Gedcom you should be able to import it into V6. However the most important difference between V3 and V6 is the Project structure, which was introduced in V4. In V6 in the Project Window click New...

Re: Exporting from Gen8 into Family Historian 6

Hello, welcome to FHUG.
There is some advice about importing from Generations in the Knowledge Base here:
Knowledge Base > Import from Generations Family Tree
Ask again here if you have any problems or further questions after studying that.

Adrian: yes, I guess I was trying to avoid that tangent by saying I don't usually record these relationships as such! There are a few occasions, typically when step-children are recorded in censuses, BMD records, etc under their step-father's surname and I want to make it clear that was not their su...

Re: Problems with extended families in AS

Mike, An adopting relationship, which you are now discussing, is different from a step-relationship which Evelyn is discussing. True, AS cannot create the parent-child adopting relationship but the child can still be recorded in the census with the adopting parents. And I agree it is important to cr...

Re: Problems with extended families in AS

For some reason AS did not offer me the option of entering the relationship as step son or daughter. I dont know why that term was not on the list of offered relationships? There are many other relationships which are not included in the drop-down menu in AS. (For example aunt, nephew, mother-in-la...

Re: Age at death

On a slightly related topic: FH normally displays an exclamation mark against an event in the Facts tab if a recorded age is inconsistent with the birth date. This is useful in alerting the user that the newly entered fact might not relate to the right person. But for ages under 12 months this doesn...

1) Can you clarify what you want? Do you mean you want a column of Surnames followed by columns showing every place associated in any way with each surname? (Remember a place can be recorded against birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial, census, occupation....or any other event.) Or do you want su...

Re: Autocompletion for cities names and countries names

Hello, welcome to FHUG. 1) FH does not have a built-in database of names of cities and countries, so the first time you enter a particular Place name you will have to type it in full. However the next time you want to enter the same Place you will find that as you start to type FH will automatically...

I have just tested this. The following are all correctly plotted: Downey, CA Downey, California Downey, California, USA But Downy, CA is plotted in South Africa. The spelling is important. If you zoom right in on the point plotted in South Africa you will find it is centred on Downy Street !

So click Add in the main toolbar and then choose Unrelated Individual and enter your own name. Then g...
