Re: Sharing a note

Yes, you can use a Note Record, otherwise known as a Shared Note. Start with Add > Shared Note from the Main toolbar. This will open a Property box for the new Note Record, where you can enter your text. You can also link Sources to this record. Then when you want to link this note to an individual,...

Re: Focus Window and Property Box

Another way of working is to use a diagram displaying a small number of generations. You can create a text scheme to display a wide variety of information in each individual's box. I work with the diagram window open and simply switch the Property box from one person to another by clikcing on their ...

Re: brick wall in New Zealand

Sorry to bring disappointing news, but Harry and Prudence Hill and their children feature in quite a lot of public trees on Ancestry. According to these, their son Harry junior was Henry Wilson Hill (this confirms the middle initial W in the passenger list) and he died in 2005 in Napier. One of the ...

Re: Emigration Sentence template

This is very odd. I have never used Witnesses for Emigration events so I have never changed any defaults for the Witness statement. On first checking I saw that there was indeed an override set to Emigrated <from {_place}> <to {_place2}> <with {other=principal, emigrant}> just as you say. However I t...

It's also useful to add a column to the Records Window, Individuals tab, to show the Pool Number. To do this, right-click on any column heading and select Configure Columns . In the next window scroll to the bottom of the list on the left and select <other> , then click the ' > ' symbol in the centr...

Re: Project failed to open

Yes, that explains why you don't have a zipped backup file. So make sure you keep that FH Gedcom Back up -Fosters 2020/03/20 22.43 file safe because it is only a week old and is probably your most recent 'backup'. Unfortunately there isn't a proper project structure on OneDrive, but in one of your p...

Re: Project failed to open

This is still baffling, but there is one more thing to check. When you close FH and create the backup, look at the Enter Backup File Name window. Is the Save as type set to Zipped File *.zip? (This is the default). If not, you must have clicked the small arrow at the right of that field and changed ...

Re: Project failed to open

OK, so you are creating a small backup (Gedcom only). This will definitely be a zipped file. You may not realise this if you don't have Windows Explorer set to display file extensions. Open Windows Explorer, then go to the View tab and tick File name extensions , as shown here: (If you are not using...

Re: Project failed to open

(Edit: Mike beat me to it) Judy, I don't think you have previously mentioned that you have some backups on your laptop. You had only mentioned a backup on an external drive. You say you make these backups each time you close FH. If so, this is exatly what you need. Is FH set to do this automatically...

Only other thing I have is an address were we lived from 1962 until his death. 12 Beverly Place New Lynn, Auckland, N.Z. Yes, that's in your (very small) tree on Ancestry, which it seems you didn't know you had! https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/160632541/person/272098289795/facts ...

Harry Joseph Hill features in three members trees on Ancestry, but I see that you are the owner of one of them! In case he was actually born in the UK, there was a Harry J Hill born in Q2 1922 in Newton Abbot registration district, Devon, mother's maiden name Lambshead. (Vol 5B p 145) By the way you...

Can you give some more details: Was FH open at the time the internet connection was lost? Do you keep your project folder in cloud storage (e.g. OneDrive or Dropbox)? If so, do you also have the folder available locally on your laptop? If there is no cloud storage involved the loss of internet conne...

Re: Moving in Ancestors view

When you talk about starting with yourself on the left and moving across the tree to the right, you have to be clear about whether you are moving across your ancestors to the right or across your descendants to the right. And how would you expect to describe a tree in which you place yourself in the...

Re: Moving in Ancestors view

Mike, I think William probably meant that the All Relatives diagram contains more people than he wants. I think he wants to imitate the Ancestors and Descendants tabs of the Focus window. This is why I suggested the Ancestors and Descendants diagram with the siblings roots branches unticked.

Have you tried the Ancestors and Descendants diagram (third of the four diagram icons in the main toolbar)? You will need to untick the option to Auto-display root's siblings' branches, which I think is ticked by default.

Minor point - In fact, annulment is already a standard event
So it is! I was looking under 'M' hoping to see Marriage Annulment in the list of six other marriage-related facts. Although of course Divorce doesn't come under M so there's no reason why Annulment should.

Re: Question: Marriage Status

I think the way to go is to create a custom annulment event, as Adrian suggests. Your evidence (source) for the annulment can be cited against that event, and any further details entered in the note field for the event. Even if an 'annulled' status were available you would need to record your eviden...

Re: Connect two people

Victor, yes there are many ways of dealing with people with unknown surnames. Different users have different techniques. Some people put a woman's married surname in brackets if they don't know her maiden name. But in this case, if using that method I would use '(Smith)' rather than '(Baker)'. We kn...
