Re: 'O.S.P.O.VY.M.S Raconia' - What does it mean?

Rather than VY could it be H ? Then the last bit would be HMS Raconia/Laconia. According to Wikipedia there was an RMS Laconia, which on 4 September 1939 was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted into an armed merchant cruiser. I don't know if that would have converted it from RMS to HMS. Edi...

Re: Surname list and count per project

There is a plugin called Surname Summary Report written by Jane, which gives totals for each surname with the earliest and latest dates for each. It doesn't count males and females separately but could probably be modified to do so.

We've had a discussion about product registration before, including the fact that some of us don't see these details, even though we have definitely registered. See this topic: Question on registration info in Help > About (16615)

it's bugged me every time I cited a 1939 image because I was saying "Item" and not knowing what on earth it meant... This is from Findmypast: The National Archives' reference number is a unique identifier for a record or images of a record. It consists of a Piece number and Item number. A...

Re: Change Focus window to that shown in property box

There is a need for consistency here. I work from diagrams. The interaction between diagrams and the Property Box works in the same way as that between the Focus Window and the Property Box. If you change the individual in the Property Box by any means other than selecting them in the diagram, the i...

Re: import same-sex partner from TMG to FH

When you identified two people as married, did you do it by creating a marriage event? If so the existence of the event overrides the marriage status as set on the main tab of the Property Box. If you now delete the marriage event (on the Facts tab for one of the Individuals) you should find that th...

Re: Stopping Age Count

Just be aware that entering text into the date field will produce odd effects in narrative reports. If you look at the Sentence in the Property box for a death event where you have entered 'DECEASED' you will find it says 'He died "DECEASED"' . To correct this you will have to adjust the n...

Re: Stopping Age Count

Personally I don't think that a blank in the death column suggests that someone is still alive. It just means you don't have any information about whether or when they died. If you had a blank in the birth column it wouldn't mean they had never been born! It is certainly not as misleading as having ...

Re: Stopping Age Count

I assume you are referring to the age displayed in the Focus window if someone has a date of birth but not death. If you know that someone has died but you don't know the date or place of death, simply create a death fact with no other details. You don't need to enter anything in the date field for ...

Re: Computer failed only have upgrade disk for v6

When you refer to finding the V5 product code 'on the disk' are you referring to your old hard disk, or a CD? If you purchased V5 as a download the licence name and registration key would have been in the email you received at the time. Did you save those details from the email anywhere on the hard ...

The display of the Short Title is governed by Tools > Preferences > Records Window , where you can tick or untick the option to Use Short Title for Source record names if available . It is certainly not intended for notes. It is for use if your full title format is quite long and/or you need a succi...

Why has no one taken screen shots of a birth certificate, the filled in repository and the source after it is entered in to FH and this would stop all of my and no doubt many others questions about what goes where, or even make a video. Again is this not right, facts attached to just one person. The way I read the diagram: Repository holds source, source can be attributed to many people and facts, citation can only be attached to one person (fact is about that person) e.g. Source- Wedding Certificate, Citation- Fact is date of wed...

Re: How to add spouses to descedant trees

Fork style is only available for Ancestor diagrams (and the ancestor section of All Relatives or Ancestor-and-Descendant diagrams). The fork goes upwards (or sideways, if you use right to left orientation) to the parents in each generation. Perhaps it would simply take up too much space in a descend...

In that list of links it has never been possible to select more than one record because the Go To action opens the Property Box for the sel...

Those may offer a way to get the settings back.

Any customisations could also be copied from the desktop if they have not been backed up elsewhere, as the desktop is still OK.

Re: How would we fare if the Records Office honoured its confidentiality agreements?

The 1911 census was released after a legal challenge by Guy Etchells under the Freeedom of Information Act. Previously TNA had applied the non-statutory '100 year rule' (and even that seemed to contravene the 'confidentiality' statement) but they were forced to release it a couple of years early, wi...

Here's a related challenge: How many of those 8 (or 16, or 32) do you have photographs of? Obviously this will depend on how good your ancestors were at keeping precious photos and telling the successive generations who the people were. (Praise be to those who wrote on the back of the picture, espec...

There is also a standard Adoption fact which is useful if you happen to know the date, place or age at which he was adopted. You can enter the names of the adopting parents as witnesses. (In cases where you know the birth parents they too can be entered as witnesses).
