Re: Census records.

Hello Rosina, welcome to FHUG. I have moved this topic from the General forum in the lower section to the General Usage forum which is for questions about using FH. (The other forum is for general discussions not directly related to FH). I’ll assume that you mean you have downloaded images of census...

Re: change settings so dates are circa instead of cal

What is clear from this thread is that although we are all aware of the Gedcom definitions we each have our own way of applying them! Helen never uses App/Circa , Adrian never uses Cal and I never (well, hardly ever) use Est . Perhaps, reverting to Irene's original question, the message is that alth...

Re: change settings so dates are circa instead of cal

because there's no way of knowing how the guess was derived. Well, in my experience a guess is always derived using some kind of algorithm, or there's no point in guessing at all. Which means it's an Estimate. But then of course there's no way of knowing what the algorithm was..... (My turn to be c...

Re: change settings so dates are circa instead of cal

I have always felt that there are difficulties with the FH/Gedcom definitions. Firstly, the definitions of Calculated and Estimated both refer to the way the date was arrived at, while the definition of Approximate refers to the level of precision/accuracy of the date (i.e. not very) but says nothin...

Re: change settings so dates are circa instead of cal

The difference between an estimated ( Est ) date and an approximate ( App / Circa ) date is a subtle one, to say the least. Is an estimated date based on some vague information, making it more reliable than an approximate date, but less reliable than a calculated one? Given that calculated dates are...

Re: posts show as unread even after viewing them

Mike, I use the default display (earliest post first) and can confirm Bill's findings. If there are multiple pages in a topic but you haven't opened the last page the topic is treated as unread. This makes sense, as there are some posts you haven't seen.

Re: Reducing the size of the source list in reports

Have you looked at the Sources tab in the Options? There you can choose how much Source information to include. To keep things to a bare minimun you could choose to show the Source Title and nothing else. It really depends how much information about the Source you want to see in the report.

Re: Sorting in Records window

Yes, in haste I had forgotten that the right-click sort order is not the same as making a permanent change in the "Configure Columns", sorry. I was thinking it was a short cut to the same end. ( If you use right-click to reverse the order then the alt key method doesn't change it back, you...

Re: Sorting in Records window

You can right-click on the heading and choose Sort Ascending or Sort Descending. You have probably selected Descending in the past. You can also hold down the alt key while clicking on the heading and the order is reversed. Although this doesn't seem to work if you have previously set Descending as ...

There is a standard query called All Facts which produces a complete list of facts with columns showing the Fact Owners, Place and precise Event/Attribute. If you click on the heading of the Fact Type column it will sort the facts alphabetically so that all facts of the same type are listed together...

Re: Deleting Role Witnesses

I am not sure whether that discrepancy is by design or by mistake. What do others think? For consistency I think the Spouse witness roles should either be included in all narrative reports or in none, so it's probably a mistake. However, it's a lose-lose situation. There is a good chance that some ...

Yes, it would be nice to understand exactly what got imported from TMG, so perhaps John could answer the questions in your post earlier today before he deletes the unwanted witness roles. But in answer to his question, What's the best way to deal with this issue with the latest version of FH - as th...

Re: Deleting Role Witnesses

Your description is rather different, so needs some investigation. Although it is not possible within FH to add the role of bride as a witness at the bride's own wedding, it appears from what brianlummis (the OP) said that the witness role does get imported from TMG, and it causes problems in some ...

Re: Ellen Allen

This is a tough one. One possibility is that William Curtis was Ellen's second husband. If that were the case, she would have been married under her first husband's surname, not under her maiden name of Allen. So it's worth checking out any other marriages of a William Curtis to an Ellen with any su...

Re: Naturalisation

I think the important point in Victor's example is not whether the woman automatically acquired German citizenship (perhaps she didn't, despite what it says in the National Archives blog about aliens in WW1), but that she lost her British citizenship as a result of the 1914 Act, and subsequently app...

But Victor's example raises different question: why did a British citizen lose her British nationality when she married a German? She may not have lost her British nationality as soon as she married, but only after the British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w...

Re: fact type with blue arrow

Have you recorded the father as the witness (informant) who registered the birth? The birth of a child and the registration of the birth are separate events but the distinction in the Facts tab is lost if you add the witness/informant to the birth event . The parent-child relationship remains intact...

Re: Naturalisation

There is a standard fact called Naturalisation i.e. the event of obtaining citizenship.
(not Nationalisation - that's something that happens to businesses or industries when government takes them over!)

I would use the Note field of the fact to explain the unusual circumstances.

OK, it looks as if you have removed Note from the list of Fields Required for the Birth fact.
Use Tools > Fact Types, select Birth then click Edit and tick the Note option.
