Re: Entering children of unmarried women

Yes, Jane's suggestion works for names. You could also do it by setting a flag on the individual and making the various name lines conditional on flags. However I have encountered a need for variety of types of one-off change in diagram texts, sometimes involving more than just the name (for example...

Re: Entering children of unmarried women

I too have sometimes needed to make "one-off" changes to the text in a diagram box and find it unnecessarily fiddly and time consuming. There is a Wish List item which asks for improved formatting options for diagram boxes. It was prompted by the lack of ability to selectively override any...

Re: Delete/Edit

Well done. I take it you mean that as well as re-linking your grandparents as a couple you have also now removed the unknown spouse and extra link/child. Do make sure that the details of your grandparents' marriage (date and place) have been preserved. Just ask again if anything still doesn't look r...

Re: Delete/Edit

The video link Jane has given shows you how to move children from one family to another. However at this stage you are asking how to re-link your grandfather and grandmother as husband and wife. To do this, select your grandfather (ID 51) and view him in the Focus Window. If he has the 'unkown' spou...

Re: Delete/Edit

If you selected Unlink, as Jane advised, nothing will have been deleted. If you accidentally clicked on a Delete option you would have seen a warning message saying "Careful! Are you sure you wish to delete this record?" Do you remember seeing a warning like that? I suspect you unlinked yo...

Re: Splitting a generation into multiple rows

Spouses are always displayed in the same horizontal line. However if they had children it is possible to move their rows of children to different levels (using the Box & Bar option in the Movement Control Box ) and this can help to distinguish the family groups resulting from each marriage. This...

Re: How can I refresh the Places record list

As Mike said, the problem with using Find and Replace within FH is that the original Place records will become unlinked and may hold important details. However, if you have never worked directly with Place records you probably don't have any media linked to them, or any notes in them. In that case t...

Re: Descendant Diagram question

That change is OK as long as you don't want to show any other alternate names which are nothing to do with married names. You did say you had entered nicknames like 'Ted' as alternate names, and if you want them to show in diagrams you do need that original aka line as well. For those women who cont...

Re: Descendant Diagram question

Neil, With a diagram open, use Diagram > Options and click on the Text tab. The text scheme you are using will be highlighted. Click the Clone button to make a copy of it and give the copy a distinct name (e.g. add the word 'modified' to its name). The copy will now be selected and you can experimen...

Re: Descendant Diagram question

my Dad's brothers are Dennis, Roland, William Edwin and Joseph Robert, but known as Den, Ron, Ted and Bob, my grandma was Susan Ada, but called Ada, so I added alternates for them The first four of those are not really alternate names because they are diminutives of the first 'given' name, so I wou...

Re: Descendant Diagram question

If you really want to display women's married names as aka names in a diagram then don't delete anything. But for consistency you would need to add the married name as an alternate name for ALL married women. As Jane and I have both said, it's not common practice to add them when using FH. The conve...

Re: Descendant Diagram question

I assume you mean some women have their married name prefixed by aka in addition to, not instead of, their birth name? This will happen if you are using a diagram text scheme which includes a line for Name (a.k.a.) and you have entered an Alternate name for them in FH by clicking on more (+)... next...

Re: Living individuals in a diagram

@ sago_palm43 , did you add a whole extra line in the text scheme to test for the Private flag being not set? If so, as you have discovered, this won't achieve the desired result because anybody who has one flag but not the other will still have their details shown. If that is what you tried, you ca...

Re: A Family Group

As Jane says, a Descendants report might suit your purposes best. There is the Descendants by Generation report (under Narrative Reports) or the Descendant Outline (under Outline Reports). However if you do use the Individual Summary Report you have complete control over the order in which people ap...

Re: Reporting Issues

I agree with Mervyn's point that advice given by FHUG members shouldn't be portrayed as definitive or 'official' in the way that John Cardinal's advice about his own software is. It's also important that no FHUG member should feel discouraged from contributing to a discussion because they fear they ...

It should be OK, but I suggest that you first make a copy of the .ged file which includes the data you entered on Friday. . Re: How Related Diagram

My preference would be to display both relationships in the diagram, to highlight the complexity of the relationship. So I would use two lines: =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) and =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2) This makes it easy to add a more lines if more relationships are found.

Re: More deciphering

There was a Hannah Lock buried in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, 16 January 1792, no age recorded. But Trowbridge is some distance from Pitton so it's unlikley to be the one. The parents don't seem to have strayed from Pitton at all, as they had 12 children baptised there between 1787 and 1813. Findmypast d...
