Re: When to stop with Sources

...like someone born in a house lived all there days there and died in it and 20 events through their life at that address, do we need to know their residence 20 times when it doesn't change at all? You don't need to record 20 Residence events. If you are satisfied that someone lived at the same ad...

Re: Source help

Re the baptism question: as you say, it is a subjective judgement and people will have different suggstions. Unlike Helen, I would say you have a single source (a single piece of paper) which is the birth certificate. It happens to have a note written on it giving details of the baptism. But I would...

To edit any sentence template globally, use Tools>Fact Types . Select the fact in question, then click Edit on the right. For the residence fact, you would need {date} {individual} lived <at {address}, >{place} Personally I prefer 'at' rather than 'in' as a prefix to the address. This seems better w...

There is also a standard Adoption fact which is useful if you happen to know the date, place or age at which he was adopted. You can enter the names of the adopting parents as witnesses. (In cases where you know the birth parents they too can be entered as witnesses).

Re: Census entry - Individual v Family

I think the family census event is offered by FH simply because it is in the Gedcom spec. I can't think of any advantages. As it says in the Knowledge Base: It is recommended that the Census (family) Event is IGNORED, as it is not supported by the standard Census Report nor the Ancestral Sources pro...

Re: Source help

I think Gowermick is referring to the query called Individuals Linked to Source . It produces a list similar to the View>Record Links referred to by pwe. But note that it only lists Individual records linked to the source, not other types of record (e.g. Family records, Note records, Place Records),...

The Title of the whole picture should be something more general, like 'Wedding of X and Y'. Most ships which left Liverpool for a transatlantic journey called at Queenstown, Ireland. Between 1849 and 1920 'Queenstown' was the name of the port now known as Cobh (pronounced 'Cove') in County Cork. It is on the south coast of Ireland and certainly not 'above Liverpool'. According to Wikipedia...

Re: Exception log question after gedcom import from RM7

To be honest, I'm very leery of images ballooning the program into the stratosphere size-wise. You would not believe how many gravestone/birth/death/marriage images I have! That's one thing you don't have to worry about. FH can handle any number of media items without difficulty. I have over 5,000 ...

And when I click to add an Occupation field in my daily use of fh, or type occupation into the field on the main page of the Property Box, how do I know whether I am adding an Event or an attribute? The important difference between an event and an attribute is that an attribute has a value and an e...

Re: Multiple addition of place country.

As Mike says, you probably need to refresh the geocoding. Bromley, Kent, England is mapped to Bromley Green in Kent. But that may not be the one you want. If you want the Bromley which used to be in Kent and is now part of Greater London, try adding Bromley, London, England to the Standardized field...

I don't record a repository for a book unless it's a particularly rare book. But I do record the Publication Information, which should enable someone in the future to search to find where copies might be found. Obviously if it's a very rare book I would record where I found it, and if I happened to ...

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index

I wonder if FMP have decided to show the surname of an unmarried mother as the same as the child's, rather than leave it blank, to make the pre-1911 index consistent with their long-standing post-1911 index entries. Also, while they are still working on adding the mothers' names, leaving the surname...

In Diagram Options > Print tab , you have probably ticked Print text lines and boxes in black-and-white only . Untick this and the diagram will be 'printed' to PDF in colour. You may need to tick that option again when you next want to print to your own black and white printer, to avoid getting grey...

I find that with method 3 the name field is not highlighted (i.e. not surrounded by a thick border) but the cursor is still placed in that field ready for data entry, so it makes no difference to the user. Are you sure the cursor is not visible? By the way, there are indeed other ways of adding a pa...

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index

I was talking about the FMP index. They have been gradually adding mother's maiden name to their index of pre 1911 births for some time now. I don't know whether they are doing this by 'scraping' the data from GRO online, as Mervyn suggested, or collecting data from local family history societies wh...

In cases like this I don't treat the grandparents as associated persons, I just enter them in FH as the mother's parents (if I don't already have them) and then cite the nonconformist record as evidence for their names.

They have been steadily adding to it since they first started showing mothers' maiden names a few years ago. It's pretty good now, but I think there may still be a few gaps because I am still occassionally seeing entries where there is no mother's name in the index. (i.e.not even a repeat of the chi...

Re: Whole record versus name citations and my Baptism dilemma

If there is no evidence of the mother in the baptismal register, I would not infer her residence (she might have died in childbirth and infering a residence could cause confusion later on). Similarly, even the father might have died. Sometimes a baptism record will refer to a deceased parent, as in...
