Re: Sentence structures

The discussion is about what to do with census data. Use it as an event of its own or use it as a source for other events, like birth, age, data of birth, residence, etc. The answer is that for genealogists it is both. It is certainly one of the richest sources we have for 'other' information (incl...

Re: Military Service & Sources

I certainly think it would be 'over the top' to create a separate souce for every single image, particularly if you have 70 for one person! If someone had a single period of military service I create a single source called "John Smith: military service records" and attach all the images to the sourc...

Re: Grouping of fact types

I agree this approach would be useful for the types of report where the information is presented in summary/tabular form. For narrative reports it is probably less useful because the point of a narrative is that it tells the 'story' of a person's life which is normally presented in chronological ord...

Yes the behaviour is odd. I had never noticed because I use the mouse to select the option I want. However, among other oddities it seems that if you use the left arrow on the keyboard it goes to the middle option. (But only if you don't use the right arrow first!).

Re: Death & Burial entries

David, the exact format varied from one US state or city to another, and from one time period to another. Here are two examples, one from 1899 Philadelphia and the other from 1944 Ohio state. Personally I just enter the burial date and place manually in FH and cite the same source as the death event...

Re: Census Place, how do you decide what is right

Another issue is where Census enumerators didn't bother to fill in the appropriate fields such as Parish, Tything, Town, Village or Hamlet Sometimes the enumerators didn't bother to fill in all these fields if they were the same as on the previous page(s). If you have a subscription to FMP or Ances...

In the Report Options, Sources tab, what have you set for the Location of the Source pictures? It sounds as if you have it set to 'Above All Citations'. Change it to 'Below Each Citation'.

Re: AS Not Creating Census Entry

Was FH open at the time you made the entries in AS? If so, when you went back to FH you should have seen a message saying the file had been modified by an external application (AS) and asking if you wanted to re-load it in FH. If that happened, did you say 'yes' to reload?

Re: AS Not Creating Census Entry

(Edit: Mike' reply arrived while I was writing this) If you have more than one individual in your file with the same name you might find it has been linked to the wrong individual, i.e. you selected the wrong one in AS by mistake. You say that AS has copied the census file to the correct 1871 Census...

Re: linking individual to family

I assume you have already created an individual record for George, either from within FH or when entering the 1851 census details in AS. When you are recording the 1841 census for the grandparents, make sure you select the right 'George' to add to their census household, either by selecting him from...

Re: My Father in 1939 register

Don't be put off by the fact that the mother's date of birth has the wrong year. I have found quite a lot of people who gave the correct day and month for their birth but the wrong year, either deliberately (to pretend to be younger) or through genuinely not knowing their own age. Although you think...

That page in the Knowledge Base says the max size is 3276 mm x 3276 mm (i.e. 327.6 cm x 327.6 cm) so your diagram width of 411.02 cm is greater than that.

If you are talking about keeping the Property Box docked, use Tools>Preferences>Workspaces and in the column for Preferred Position for Property Box select Docked for whichever windows you want this to apply to.

Hello Peter, I'm glad you got there in the end. There is one other thing I was going to suggest, although it's not needed now. In your example you could have tried clicking the expansion button just above James Denny jnr. If he was the diagram root everyone above him would have disappeared from the ...

I know James Denny is the file root but I don't believe he is the diagram root. If he was the diagram root there would be an expansion button shown at every link between generations above him, so that each generation could be closed off. But there is no expansion button between William Roy Denny and...

What Mike is describing is a half-sister relationship (i.e. the individuals have one parent in common). This is not the same as a step-sister relationship, where there is no biological link between the individuals (they don't have a parent in common, but a parent of one of them has married a parent ...

OK, so I think you have selected James DENNY and Nellie ROY as the root couple of the All Relatives diagram (or perhaps the root is their son William Roy DENNY. I use a different colour scheme in my diagrams, so it's hard to tell). But if the problem person is Karin BLACKBOURN her ancestors will not...

It's a letter called thorn, and is used as an abbreviation meaning 'the'. It's a common assumption that it was pronounce 'ye' but apparently it wasn't! Here's a screenshot from Wikipedia. The full article is here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorn_(letter)

I agree entirely with the previous advice to use the Ancestral Sources companion program (free) to automate much of the process of recording census data. But just as an aside, in case a different kind of situation arises where you want to add the same fact to several people, you might like to know t...
