Not a wish list item for the display, more for the input of 'about' dates, but it could do with a vote or two if you feel that 'app' is not helpful in reports.

Marriages Discussion
'I think you might have to draw the line somewhere.' and 'I don't want to create every witness as an individual in FH, just the ones who are family members, the others I am quite happy to record in a note.' The program itself shouldn't have a limit. It's the users who can decide what they want to re...

Evidence Management
'I've struggled with this ever since I started doing family history, because IMHO all the programs I've tried force the user into making conclusions ahead of the evidence.' That's because they all use Gedcom as their initial starting point. Gedcom is not an evidence model, it's conclusional. The oth...

MULTIMEDIA WITH CROSSES
The only way to change the number of recently used files is to edit the registry settings. A more drastic way might be to totally uninstall FH and reinstall, but I can't guarantree that removing FH will clear all the registry entries. It's up to you to decide if you want to go through the hassle of ...

Narrative Report, Different facts on same line.
This is not possible. A narrative report is an attempt to produce a textual report that reads more like a narrative than a list of events.

Version 3 Demo and XP SP3
Make sure that the V3 read only version is the same as the one from here - http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downloads/read-only-version. Download it to make sure rather than using the one on the CD. Your brother will need to install FH on his computer before he can view the tree. Follow the instruc...

Trying to build my first Event/Attribute
First off think about why you really need the event/attribute. Events and attributes are useful when you have a lot of occurances of them and you can then use queries to find them, manipulate them, manage them. They are pretty limiting in the amount of information they can hold as they have a very l...

Blocking selected photos in online Trees
You can mark multimedia items so that they don't appear in reports or diagrams. Diagrams don't appear online unless you manually include them. Reports can appear online if you use FH's website generation facility. If you put your data online using some method other than FH's, then you will need to e...

Embedding photo's
Another point against embedding images into the Gedcom file is that FH loads the file into memory. So disk space might not be an issue, but memory will be. This will lead to your computer running slower and the lack of memory causing problems with other programs. Embedding images was designed into t...

Narrative reports
No computer generated report will look like a book. The complexity in getting the program to generate a very readable biography from a list of facts without it looking repetative is very high. Reasonable attempts can be made, but in anything to do with real life there are always so many exceptions a...

Where/who to link a photo to
I would create a new source record and attach the photo to it. I can then attach the source to the birth events for the various people who were born at the cottage. In a more general case, a residence attribute could be created with a citation to the source.

Improve Flag-sharing dialogue
A good example of how a multiple checkboxes can be changed with one click is Hotmail (there are other web based email systems available).
The system that hotmail and other use could also be used in FH for the layout of the flags. Just replace emails with flags.

Res Privata amp; 64 bit Windows
Seems like it was on the CD accompanying issue 42 (Oct 2006) of 'Your Family Tree' magazine. If anyone has that copy, maybe they could pass on the program to Jane so that she can put it in the download section for everyone else to use since Res Privita is no longer available on the web. See http://w...

Emailing a Diagram
The difference in the two types only becomes noticable with large diagrams. With a large diagram a JPG becomes unmanagebly big in pixel dimensions and image viewers might not be able to cope. To counter this, a user might typically change the scaling factor so that the text is smaller in the jpg. Th...

The first thing you need to do/check is that Window's hidden folders and files setting is cleared. By default Window keeps certain folders hidden from view and for some reason FH uses these hidden folders to keep user created settings which means that users can't easily find them! In Explorer select...

V4.1 upgrade
A big congratulations to Simon for producing the latest upgrade. [smile] It was a pleasant and happy surprise to see an upgrade with so many fixes and updates. Simon must have been very busy. Considering the period between updates in v3, I hope this bodes well for future updates to v4 and that any f...

Upgrading from v3 to v4
I don't know what the effect would be if you did keep the project in your current directory. If you've got everything backed up then have a try, but it's your responsiblity. FH might keep everything in place or it might get it's knickers in a twist trying to copy into the same place.

Upgrading from v3 to v4
When you start V4, set the location of your projects to be on D:Data. Create your new project. You'll end up with D:DataYourProject. Let FH copy the files across. Now copy across the files manually. This is a very important step because FH will only copy the files referenced in the Gedcom. Your spre...

Just thought of another way to find the \ path. Go to FH's Work with External File Links option available in the Tools menu. You should then find it showing with a cross against it. You can then click the edit button to fix the angle brackets. You might also be able to use the Goto button to jump to...

Looking into the issue a bit further the error is due to the characters. I had been assuming that \Goto to jump to the line mentioned in your error and you should be able to work out from the data near to it. Make sure that word wrapping is off, check at Format->Wordwrap, otherwise the goto option w...
