Re: Discontinuing support for IE

If you're using FH7, the default configuration is to open web pages in an external window in your default browser. So, you need to make something other than IE your default browser (this is a good thing to do for all sorts of reasons, as IE is becoming unsupported all over the place). Edge is the op...

Re: Linking laptop to PC

Mark, if authors have followed the instructions, any links to another piece of KB content will dislay the same text as the title of that KB content, so a search for the title should find it. As fall back, I can run a spider looking for broken links when you're ready (we did look for a wordpress plug...

Re: converting existing generic Source records to templated Source records

Depending on how well structured your existing sources are, and whether you want to take on writing a plugin, it might be possible to convert some of them automatically -- but everyone's structure is different, so everybody's plugins will be different as well. There are a couple of example conversio...

Re: Linking laptop to PC

So you want to replace the Synchronising Data with the Internet topic under Working with the Internet with a Synchronising topic under Files and Folders? Don't forget that every article can go in as many topics as are relevant so people can find it via different routes. Hence the article on Synchron...

Re: 1939 Register

The redaction was done when the register was first digitised. It is updated regularly (to open records for people born more than 100 years or more). It is also possible to send proof of death for an individual whose record is closed (typically a copy of a death certificate, although I have used a co...

All your customisations will be preserved, although some of them might be affected by changes to the underlying format and need to be tweaked. (It depends what you've used). We'll help you here if any tweaks are needed.

Re: Linking laptop to PC

No objection here, Mark -- I'd like to see what you do pull together all the related articles into a coherent whole (which may still be an interlinked set of articles, or one article with a bunch of sections. What we've migrated is a bit piece meal and it's ripe for a redo.

Re: Data Entry Assistants - UK Royal Navy Register

A DEA to do that (create the transcription of the source, and create all the facts) is theoretically possible but: It probably won't make it to the top of anyone's to-do list soon I suspect that people will all want to create different facts and in different ways, so it wold be hard to create someth...

Re: Data Entry Assistants - UK Royal Navy Register

Are you asking about: A source template? An autotext template for Text from Source to use with the source template Both of those should be easy enough for you to create yourself with a little guidance, and then use to create each source you need. A DEA (Data Entry Assistant) would probably not add a...

Add values to Citation Assessment (V7)

In addition to the new options for Citation Assessment in V7, it would be useful to add
  • Authored to Source
  • Undetermined to Information
  • Negative to Evidence
bringing the options in line with the Evidence Analysis Process Map by Elizabeth shown Mills as recommended by the BCG.

The new KB doesn't host plugins, I'm afraid.

You can take an approach like that at Compendium of Conversion Plugins, linking to a posting that has it attached.

Having programmed these things, I can say that they're often set to display for a fixed time which doesn't depend on the PC or file size, but is aimed at the non-existent 'average'.

Re: Hide Startup Banner

What’s a splash screen? When you start FH (and many other apps) it displays an image (for FH this is just the words Family Historian) while it does some startup stuff behind the scenes. If you have a fast PC (and the startup stuff is quick) the image may be displayed longer than you would wish, in ...

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem

Ok, so you're entering the birth time using the DEA and wondering where it's saved. tlwa01 is right -- it's only recorded in Text from Source. Gedcom (and therefore FH) don't support associating a time with a fact, so there's nowhere to put it other than Text from Source (which the DEA does) or the ...

Re: Source Record Template questions

There isn't any way to include the complete census date in the Census Source Template, other than to create a template per year, which as you say would be cumbersome. However, I'm not sure why you'd want to. Censuses are only taken once every few years so the year is sufficient to identify the sourc...

Re: New libraries available for FH6 -- please test!

compat53 is now properly packaged and available for loadrequire in FH6. I have tested the utf8 library at https://github.com/Stepets/utf8.lua and it works for both Lua 5.1 and 5.3 (adding functions into the pre-existing utf 8 library. (In Lua 5.1, compat53 is a prerequisite). I have asked if this li...

Re: Source Record Template questions

Principal2 is only for Marriage certificates (where you need to identify both spouses). Are you referring to the Date field within the Citation details (which I don't think is visible unless you've customised the template)? If you are, per Gedcom it would be used for the date the information was ent...

I have copied and pasted the line that Tlwa01 into line 759 and put a blank line under it (as there was one there before I rudely used the space). It has cured my problem, so thanks for that Tlwa01.
