Sounds like a good idea to me Jim! Let FH users tell FH how they are entering metadata, i.e. tell FH in Media Preferences to use EXIF or IPTC, user's choice, if one way doesn't work for them they need to choose the other option. Is that what you meant?jimlad68 wrote:perhaps an option for one or the other or both

Re: Auto import of image metadata
I just feel that the vast majority of people with metadata in image files, will have put it there using specialist images editors and not Windows Explorer. And the specialist editors are more likely to use IPTC items. I agree Adrian. However, I would imagine that Calico Pie would be reluctant to ca...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
The more I dig into the more I discover. The attached image shows how the various EXIF metadata fields are currently used by Family Historian to populate the FH media record with metadata - see highlighted fields in red. It also shows how EXIF and IPTC fields are populated with metadata depending on...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Many thanks Adrian and Mervyn for your thoughts on this. Yes Adrian, I accept your point that it may be that Microsoft are not doing anything wrong so I'll not express the issue in that way. Probably the easiest solution to this issue is that if IPTC metadata is present FH should use that, else use ...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
FH might use "external" software for image manipulation and to get at the data, if so, knowing that might "be of interest", if not Calico Pie might let you know exactly what fields it is looking for and there is a possibility that Photoshop could be made to populate those fields...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Gordon Give Photome a try it is free and you may prefer it to Windows Explorer > Properties. Thanks Colin, I'll look at that. Although I have used Windows Explorer for the purposes of the tests (rather than introduce yet another variable to the equation!) I normally use Directory Opus instead of Wi...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
After playing around with countless jpegs and various way of entering/editing metadata it seems to me that Calico Pie have chosen to import metadata based on the format chosen by Microsoft to record such data. Entering metadata via Windows Explorer always results in a successful import by FH of the ...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Ok Mike, I have now run the install again to FH v6.0.4 this time in administrator mode and nothing untoward happened. Sophos was switched off while I did that and have now switched it back on again. FH has opened up and so I'll now continue with the tests. At this stage the tests indicate it is look...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Thanks Mike. I'm sorry I missed your original note about running the installation in administrator mode. Since I've already installed FH V6.0.4 in normal mode how do I go back to run that installation in administrator mode? I can't just run it again surely, presumably I would need to revert back to ...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
I use Sophos anti-virus and did not switch that off. I took the view that if there were a conflict between running FH in administrator mode and my AV that either FH or AV would warn me of a conflict. There have not been any such messages. When I boot windows 8.1, unlike any other OS I have had, it d...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Gordon, did you use the Run as Administrator technique I suggested to install FH? Try unchecking Copy Image Tag Values to the Media Record , close & open FH, then check Copy Image Tag Values to the Media Record . Exactly which FH commands are you using to add the image and create the Media reco...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Just noticed your reply Mike (re administrator etc) as I posted the note below about current progress. Re: Auto import of image metadata
I have now upgraded to 6.0.4 and the problem with 'Auto Generate' keywords is fixed in that version. When I uncheck it now stays unchecked. Unfortunately that is the only real progress made so far. The metadata is still not being picked up by FH. Next I tried entering the metadata with Windows explo...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Thanks Mike, I haven't upgraded to 6.0.4 and I'm just about to do that now. If that doesn't work I shall enter the metadata via Windows Explorer then see if that makes a difference.

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Thanks Jim. When I look at my image with Windows Explorer I can see the metadata I want FH to use is in exactly the same Windows fields as shown in Tim's example. So the problem now is why is FH picking up this data in Tim's case but not in mine. We are both using the same version of FH. I am on Win...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
That's encouraging Tim, hopefully I can get to that stage too. When I look at the Windows detail pane I can also see the metadata but I can't get FH to pick it up for some reason. Can you confirm what preference settings you have used to make this happen? I use Photoshop to embed the metadata in the...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
No Joy in getting this feature to work I'm afraid. Firstly I made sure that Tools>Preferences>Media was set as follows; 1. I unchecked ' Autogenerate Keywords ' because I want FH to use the keywords already embedded in the metadata 2. I checked ' Copy Image Tag Values to the Media Record ' Then I hi...

I forgot to mention that the date recorded in the Exif 'date created' field is the date the photo was taken, not the date the file on the computer was created.

Re: Auto import of image metadata
Thanks Mike and Lorna for your thoughts. I wasn't expecting (or wanting!) the facility to apply retrospectively, only for new records being imported from now on. However I couldn't get it to work for new records. I'll look into this again tomorrow in the hope that I'll find a way to make this work. ...

Auto import of image metadata
All the photos I import to Family Historian (V6) have been prepared as jpegs in Photoshop. As part of that process I add metadata to the image using the Photoshop 'file info' panel. This is a worldwide industry standard way of recording relevant info within the images such as keywords, title, date a...

Re: Getting the Most!!!
Coming to this thread late due to updating to version 6 only yesterday. I too was hoping that the "Getting the most..." guide would have been updated for version 6. I contacted Calico Pie today and they responded as follows - We are hoping to update it for version 6. It's on our ToDo list ...

Maximum PDF Size
Thanks Jane, I didn't know that. I'll download the latest version of the driver and see if they have changed the limits.Jane said:
PDFs in FH are created by the Nova PDF driver, when you try to set a custom page for the driver it sets the page size down.
