Map Places
I've recently purchased version 6.2.7 (upgrade from version 5), having had a two year hiatus from family history research, and am familiarising myself with the new features. In the map window, can someone explain why some of the places have the tick box coloured red, while most of them are coloured ...

Re: FH V6 and Windows 10
I've just received the following from Calico Pie:
"Although FH 6 will not run on the Windows 10 Technical Preview, it will run on the release version."

Re: Wreaths
To return to my original question, I found this interesting article, which adds a bit of context to the events and protocols surrounding a person's death in the late-Victorian era:
http://www.victoriana.com/VictorianPeriod/mourning.htm
Thanks for your input Mike, it's greatly appreciated.

Re: FH V6 and Windows 10
I think you're probably right about a Windows upgrade, Mike. I'm wary of upgrading to W7 because the release of W10 is imminent, and the mere thought of upgrading to W8 is enough to put me off using computers for life. Everything I've seen, read and heard about it fills me with bewilderment and desp...

Re: Wreaths
Thanks Mike. However, I've just noticed (and had confirmed by previous posts on the subject) that v6 isn't compatible with XP, which I'm running.

Wreaths
What would be the best way to record people who sent wreaths to a funeral? I have a couple of newspaper reports of an individual's death and subsequent funeral. These reports provide a long list of people who attended the funeral, and others who didn't attend but sent a wreath. Those attenders and n...

Age for Occupation
Thanks Tatewise. I'm glad it's not just me! I've just checked a random selection of American census entries I've recently created for various people using AS. All the age entries appear as I would expect them to. Namely, the ages next to FH events (occupation and census) are the same as the ages tha...

Age for Occupation
I've just used AS to input and create marriage details from a marriage certificate. In AS options > marriage settings, I've ticked the box under 'Occupation and Residence Facts' that says 'Age in residence and occupation'. However, when AS copies the data over to FH, the age for any occupation entri...

Creating a Multimedia Object from a multi-page Doc
I'm toying with the idea of creating a PDF m/m object and 8 separate JPEG m/m objects. That way I can view the document in its entirety (using the PDF version), while using the individual JPEGs in reports. I haven't yet ruled out the possibility of using transcriptions in reports as well (or instead...

Creating a Multimedia Object from a multi-page Doc
Thanks Nick. Interesting point about including the image in reports, etc and whether it would be readable if I did - I'd not considered that. Hmm...

Creating a Multimedia Object from a multi-page Doc
I've got a scanned copy of an 8 page magazine article written by one of my ancestors. I want to create a multimedia object from the article and link it to a new source. At the moment, the article is a PDF. What's the best format to use when creating my multimedia object(s)? Would it be ok to leave i...

I agree with you about the pitfalls of relying on flags, namely the consequences of forgetting to set them. That's why I included the prompt and the ability to set/clear the To Do flag on the To Do tab. That way, it's a visible reminder for me to take the appropraite course of action. I'll take a mo...

Goodness knows what's going on here! I've rebooted and tried again and the data ref =Exists(%INDI._ATTR-TO_DO[1]%) now works!!!
For what it's worth, I'm running XP media home edition (SP3) on a standard user account. My firewall is Comodo.
Thanks for your help, tips and advice.

Label on customised tab in property box
Disappeared as in not there, gone! There's no horizontal scroll bar, and the columns are not showing in the Configure Columns for the Individual Records List. Oddly enough, the only column that is showing in the Configure Columns for the Individual Records List is the To Do column, which is not show...

Interesting idea but weird results. When I use the date ref =Exists(%INDI._ATTR-TO_DO[1]%), some of my other columns disappear. I've got the following columns: Individual Records, Record ID, Dates, Birthplace and Relationship to Root. I've tried using the above data ref with the To Do flag, the To D...

Label on customised tab in property box
Ive been playing around a bit with the To Do tab and its settings and have stumbled upon a quick and simple way of setting a To Do flag on the To Do tab. This takes the form of a simple check box that you check or clear to set/clear the flag. Create a new flag called To Do In the Customize Property...

Thanks Mike. I wasn't aware of the different date settings in the attribute property settings - it's a nice feature. As for my other problem - the issue surrounding the label - I don't think I explained myself too well. It's not the paragraph (the To Do task itself) that I want to wrap over more tha...

I've set up a customised tab on the property box using the excellent guidance in this wiki: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists I've also included a label for the To Do note box (using the instructions under the 'Create Custom Tab' section)....

Why does FH run at variable speeds?
Thanks Jane. I've traced the cause of the problem to my AVP (Microsoft Security Essentials). I've added the FH and Calico Pie folders to MSE's list of excluded folders. FH now fires up straight away first time.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Why does FH run at variable speeds?
My FH also loads pretty slowly on XP. But only for the first time I load it. If during a session on my computer I close FH down and re-open it later on in the session, it always loads much faster. The slowness only occurs the first time in a session that I open it. Can anyone suggest why this may be...
