Re: Military service records

If I have reasonable quality images of a war record (ie. one image per page/form), I quite often put them into a Word document, one per page, plus a title page describing the record (and source details, date etc ** ). Then I save that Word document as a PDF file, and then add that PDF file to the so...

Re: Media folder

On the other hand too many nested folders can exceed the Windows path length limit of 260 characters. With the Anniversary Update (version 1607) of Windows 10 you can abandon the 260 character path length, with two considerations: 1. A Windows registry entry needs to be edited*** 2. Older 32 bit ap...

Re: rotating pictures

I've never quite got to the bottom of this, but if you are a Windows user, and use Windows Explorer to show thumbnails of images, beware that if you rotate an image (in whatever way) then that thumbnail may not automatically get refreshed immediately (or not at all), so you end up thinking that the ...

Have a look at this website for Autorotate. It packages up those utilities that fugu68 mentions into something very easy and quick to use. I've been using it for years. https://savolai.net/software/jpeg-autorotate/

Re: Organisation of media folders

But be aware the Windows has a maximum path length of 260 characters eg: C:\Users\Paula\Documents\Family Historian Projects\John R. Piper Family Project\John R. Piper Family Project.fh_data\Media\ is a path length of 123 characters, and this is without a file name. If you end up with path lengths of...

Re: Question on registration info in Help > About

I've just registered to get the email bulletins, but there was no check that I have a licensed product, unless it was implicit in the email address for the sending of the bulletins, but if so I would have expected to see a warning about using the same email address.

Or use a photo editing program and add a caption to the image itself. At least then if you use that image anywhere else (outside of FH) you have caption explaining what it's about.

Re: The virtues of FH

Other than that, I agree with Mike (Tate) that the eye-catching things are the ones to concentrate on. My favourite would be diagrams, showing how easy it is to change the diagram root and hide or expand branches. Most people will be familiar with the idea of a family tree in diagram form so they w...

Re: posts show as unread even after viewing them

Wonder if we could have a "Mark topic read" function at the top of individual topics (similar to the Topics list screens). Usually one can decide if you want to read all of a topics posts after having read the top one (or few).

Re: PDF files in Media

If I double click on that pdf icon, FH opens the file (outside of FH) with my default pdf program, in my case Adobe Acrobat Reader. Alternatively you could use a graphics editor to convert that pdf file to an image (eg .jpg) that will open within FH. Not so easy if it's a multi page document of cour...

I am trying to print an ALL RELATIVES diagram to an FH pdf file. The diagram is set up for a custom paper size of 128.5" x 128.5". When I configure the Print Setup to a resolution of 360 dpi, the diagram will print to an FH pdf file. The only problem that I have with the resulting file is...

Cary's map of London (1804) from McMaster University Library is brilliant. So clear when zoomed, with no watermarks. Can snip the bit you want quite easily. I use it a lot for exploring around Hackney area. http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A80901 Nickie Great find, excell...

This is the folder structure I have on my D: drive (programs are on C:, data is all on D:) - Folder Structure.JPG Miller-Burslem is my main project, so the folder with that name is where all my files are. The folder " 0 Research " (and sub folders) is where I keep all my research notes, po...

Re: Running on two PCs

I just googled dropbox packrat and it looks like DropBox discontinued it in August 2014, and replaced it with Extended Version History, which keeps files for a year, although I can't work out from the DropBox website if this is available to new customers.

Re: Running on two PCs

I'm not sure that you can configure a memory stick to have the same drive letter on two PCs. The allocation of the drive letter is done by the PC and will depend on what else is plugged in to the usb ports and what the PC remembers about what has been plugged in in the past. I've fallen foul of this...

I would NEVER trust having my master FH project in any cloud, fine as a copy for syncing or backup, but that's all. My master copy is on my main PC and I have 5 other copies in different places (including in the cloud) which are updated daily from the master one. I even keep 3 months worth of archiv...

Electoral Roll - Dates Taken

I'm trying to pin down when my grandparents moved from Letchworth to Welwyn Garden City. From Find My Past I have them in the Spring 1926 Electoral Roll in Letchworth, and then in 1927 in WGC (no Spring or Autumn given). Does anyone know more precise dates when these electoral rolls where taken, or ...

Re: Find and Replace for in Source Notes

You could always edit your ged file with a text editor (eg Notepad), and use the replace function there. Of course you'd have to be careful if you have the 'Have Image' text anywhere else.

Make a copy of your ged file first, just in case!
