Many thanks Mike, it's good to get back and start using FH again. Your reply reminds me of how I did it previously and your suggestions re saving alterations and repoprts etc are most helpful.
My thanks again
Jim

Female ancestors- is there a tool or plug-in to develop a tree?
Hi, It's a few years since I was last on the forum but seem to recall that some time ago i was able to print a tree for the female lineage of myself and that of my wife. With upgrades and PC crashes I seem to have lost any reports I once developed and cannot recall if there was a tool to do this or ...

Re: Upgrading to FHv6
That would explain some of my confusion and as I only open the one project from one link, or should I say the one shortcut, I guess I might not have spotted that for quite some time.
it looks as if that will have to await my return now but many thanks for pointing it out.

Re: Upgrading to FHv6
Thanks Mike, there's a fair bit of sorting out to do yet and I may have to leave it until I return home on Thursday week as I'm away for the next 10 days. You have given me a lot to think about ( I'm pretty slow at understanding things lately!) but one point that you made and I have started sorting ...

Re: Upgrading to FHv6
Ok, that recommended reading of KB items has helped greatly and my files are much tidier now. I do understand now what you meant in your note 2) re Absolute files and need to take care of that before I get the new PC , and install FH6*. If there is one thing that puzzles me and which I cannot find a...

Re: Upgrading to FHv6
Many thanks for your reply Mike and it is a relief to read " That is mostly ok" Nevertheless it looks as if I still have a fair bit of tidying up to do and some further reading from those links. I'm not sure I understand the first two sentences of your note 2) but that will probably be cle...

Re: Upgrading to FHv6
In tidying up my files prior to loading FH6 I have become concerned that the number of layers, or steps, taken to reach them is over long. To get to any picture the structure I have is: D: > Dropbox > FH PROJECTS FOLDER > FHPROJECT > FH Project.fh-data* > Media > Photographs By Family > xxx family >...

Re: Advice required on when to install V6
Many thanks Mike for your most informative and helpful reply. As I really have no desire to have FH5 on the new machine I will load FH6 on the current PC before the arrival of the new one. In the same vein as I don't want to run into any problems with Windows 10 installation on the old machine befor...

Re: Advice required on when to install V6
Mike, A bit of an update and a further question. I have ordered a new PC which will of course have Windows 10 installed. My existing PC has Windows 7 and is still on FH5. I have purchased and now have had delivered FH6 in a boxed set, your advice Mike re the cheaper alternative of a downloaded upgra...

Re: Media linked files
Also, FH V6 does have built-in tools to automatically repair broken Media links. That's very reassuring as I have found that during three years of not using FH I had moved and in some cases deleted many images from my Dropbox FH Media folder on my C drive to keep below my Dropbox limit. All of the ...

Re: Advice required on when to install V6
Thanks for all that info Mike. The FH6 ordered is the full boxed set as I prefer to have the disc and quite like the addons offered with the purchase eg Genealogy subscription etc. July 29th duly noted. No, I don't have any intention of reusing W7 on the new machine , it would be a clean, new purcha...

Re: Advice required on when to install V6
Life is too short to worry about whether Microsoft will allow me to transfer Windows 10 to a new machine so here is what I have decided to do. I have ordered FH6 and should take delivery shortly. I may go for the free download and then use the key that comes with the package. Is there any disadvanta...

Re: Advice required on when to install V6
Thanks to Brian and Mike for the advice and links re both the installation of V6 and a subsequent transfer to a new m/c . Also there are issues which I was totally unaware of with regard to any transfer of Windows 10 if I was to download that before I build , or buy, a new machine. My immediate thou...

Advice required on when to install V6
I feel a bit like the prodigal son having stopped using FH some three years ago for no good reason than a house move and then increasing use of Ancestry and now rediscovering the flexibility of FH and needing to catch up with the three years of missed input. More specifically I have been thinking ab...

Problem solved.....for now anyway! Not sure what the root cause was but it would appear that I had a program running in the background ,possibly connected to a printer task, that was affecting FH. Ros at Calico spotted a very high processor usage when she looked at my machine using join.me and it wo...

Alas I spoke to quickly. This morning I noticed my ancestor diagram had only 5 levels above the subject, normally I have up to 10, and when I changed it the jitters started again. Changing back to 5 did not stop it and it seems to be on all diagrams and regardless of whether it is the root or any ot...

I spoke to Ros at Calico this morning and using join.me she was able to go into my copy of FH and look at possible sources of the problem. To be honest she was not certain what was causing the problem but by the time she had finished running through various options the flashing sections of the diagr...

I'll come back when I hear from Calico and share the results with others in case the same happens to anyone else.

You're right John, it is on Ancestry that I have the problem. For one moment I was beginning to think, as good as it is, Ancestral Sources was far more powerful than I gave it credit for.

Many thanks Peter. That seems to imply, if I understand it correctly, that they think I may have made changes to the text scheme ( which I haven't or at least cannot remember ever having done so) or is it that merely cloning the diagram makes some alteration ? Whichever it is I think I am much clear...

I wonder if anyone can help here? When I save a record eg Baptism certificate to a person on Ancestry it invariably appears as yet another item of media attached to the person's birth. This happens with baptisms, some marriages and census', and almost always with burials. Does anyone know how I can ...

Hi Jane, just to let you know I saved the diagram as a Custom Diagram and sent to Calico as requested ( with some help from them on how to find it once I had saved it[oops])
I'll hold off doing as you suggested for today in case they want anything else.
Thanks again
