Re: Installing FH under virtual machine on a Mac
Many thanks for the very detailed input from Mervyn. I have spent some time reading and researching - was perfectly happy with VirtualBox but now feel the whole area with the new M chip Macs a bit too much in its infancy so will upgrade my Mac and in the interim get a cheap refurbished Windows machi...

Installing FH under virtual machine on a Mac
I have been running FH (still V6.2) under VirtualBox on my Macbook for several years without any real problems (many thanks to Mervyn Ashby for great advice). However my Mac (2017 model) is now in need of replacing, and looking at the latest 2023 model (M3 chip) I am getting the impression that Virt...

Re: Recording Naval Allotment relationships
Thanks again Mike. Think I will stick to the 'simple' solution and use Residence for the beneficiary, it's not as if I have a large number. Re your other points - have not seen anything which has more than one beneficiary, and at that time (mine are mainly end of 18th/first half of 19th century) the...

Re: Recording Naval Allotment relationships
Mike, would appreciate a bit more help here! Have created my custom (Naval) fact as suggested, and it works fine except for one thing: Information on these allotments includes effectively 2 different addresses: for the sailor making the allotment, the name of the ship he was serving on (and I have u...

Recording Naval Allotment relationships
FindMyPast has just made available online the British Royal Navy Allotment Declarations 1795-1852 (from the National Archives). These give details of sailors who allocated part of their wages for the maintenance of their mothers/wives/families. I have already found records for 2 ancestors allocating...

Re: Running Family Historian successfully on Mac OS X
Mervyn Was very interested to read your post, I have just purchased my first Mac (MacBook Pro) and after a lot of reading, still confused as to the best option to take for running Family Historian (currently running V5 under Windows 7). I don't have a standalone Windows licence (only the OEM version...

Opening an FH project
I also noticed this (as I have not at the moment set a default FH project when I open AS).
I have also noticed that the toolbar is above the File/Edit/View/Tools/Help whereas in all the tutorials etc it appears below... is this a deliberate change or linked to the greyed out toolbar?

Pool Numbers
The following post (from Derek Woodman) has just appeared on the mailing list, which seems to indicate that the problem has been introduced with release 5.0.2. 'File of 1684 people. On my laptop with v5.0.1 I have 3 pools in the Search for Orphan query. On my desktop with same datafile (synched with...

Pool Numbers
Lorna asks 'is the problem only affecting larger files?' I have just over 3000 individuals, and 31 pools, with by far the majority in pool 1. I also have the records window with both pool no, and relationship to root showing, but not side by side, so the one anomaly I found (pool 22 with a wife whos...

Pool Numbers
I have also noticed an oddity - I have just one person with a 'relationship to root' (albeit a very distant one, 'ex-husband's 1st cousin 4 times removed's wife') who for some reason is in pool 22, completely on her own??? She is the only one with that particular relationship, but the '.........3 ti...

John, Interested in your concept of Family Lines but not clear exactly how you use flags to achieve it. Is there a separate flag for each line? And what exactly is displayed in the Records Window - is it the name of the Flag? (in which case I assume you have an additional 13 columns??) I would like...

FH stopped working
After reading the latest posts, did a manual update of McAfee this morning, and FH still there after 45 mins. Fingers crossed they have fixed it - thanks I suspect to the power of BT, not us humble mortals!

Re Simon's post - the McAfee address http://service.mcafee.com/ is the standard support address, and to get anywhere you have no choice but to first run their McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT) which I have done several times, and of course it shows no errors with McAfee! That at least allows you to ge...

FH stopped working
Despite my restore, and setting McAfee updates to OFF, I can see that there was at least 1 update done automatically AFTER my restore. Last night FH was fine, now the problem is back again. I have had a reply from McAfee Support, offering again to do an online chat, where they take control of my PC ...

FH stopped working
I have now done the same as Linda, and used System Restore to go back to 15/09/2011, and set McAfee NOT to automatically update (using Windows 7 64-bit and McAfee). So far FH is running OK - this is clearly a short-term solution, but I still have an open support issue with McAfee via email (online c...

Well that will teach me to be complacent! - of course, today I got the same problem, time to disappear varies between seconds and several minutes, but disappear it does. Contacted McAfee support, the guy played with the settings and said 'problem gone away, please reboot', but of course it is still ...

Auto-generation of 'today' as date
Every time I enter information with a source citation, I have to complete the entry date for this citation. Would it be possible to default this field to be today's date, rather than having to type it in full each time? It is no problem with automatic source citation on, but if I have only one entry...
