Map window not working for Denmark?
I have tried working with the map window and was somewhat surprised that the program was not able to recognize even a single place in Denmark. Some of the big cities included (København, Odense, Aarhus ...). The one mark was sat manually.
Kind regards

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
It looks like Edenia (the geo-coding site) is off line at the moment. In the meantime you could use Mike's excellent plugin which uses the Google API (Family Historian as a commercial program can't use the Google API with out a VERY expensive licence per installation), but as Mike's plugin is free it does not need one.

See the FH Help > About Family Historian that mentions the geocoding service by Edina, and the other mapping services.
Yes, the plugin is Map Life Facts and to synchronise with the FH Place mapping see its Help & Advice and F.A.Q. for How can V6 Place Records be synchronised with Plugin Locations.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the prompt answer. I have installed the plug-in and will try get it working.
Is Edina down for a longer period? I get a map but no locations at all here 8 hours later.
Kind regards
Klaus Yde

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
Just to add to this, yesterday I tried mapping about 10 places in the US that included some pretty large towns and Edina couldn't map any of them. Map Life Facts worked like a charm on all of them.

I have the plug-in working. But would prefer that the build in map were working. Edina is still down as to day 10 AM in Denmark. I have been at Edinas website http://digimap.blogs.edina.ac.uk/announcements/ where I didn't find any explanation??

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
Once you have Geo-coded your Places, using either method the map will work, Edina is up this morning, so it may simply be it's not geo-coding place names in Danish correctly. As Mike will attest geo-coding is quite a complex process and this is especially true when working in multiple languages. You can also simply manually enter the Longitude and Latitude in the place records if all else fails.

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
OK. I have used Mikes plug-in and can see my places via the plug-in - but not in the main map window. Is there a way to get those coordinates to show in the ordinary window.
I could understand if Edina couldn't show names with the special Danish characters, but also Our third biggest town Odense dont show up.

Have you seen the Plugin Help & Advice and F.A.Q. for How can V6 Place Records be synchronised with Plugin Locations.
If you set the Options as explained there, then the Plugin and FH geocode mapping of Lat/Longitude are synchronised.

All Plugin needs is on Set Preference Options tab set Locations From: Place fields only and Database in: Place Records.
Also in FH in Tools > Preferences > Map Window tick Block Refresh for Non-tentative Geocodes.

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
Hi Mike
Got it working - Will it update automatically with new places? Or have I to run the plug in to update.
Is there any explanation why the build in map is not working? The Solution with the plug in is a little long haired
Kind regards and thanks

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
You will have to run the Plugin to geocode new Place names if they are not geocoded by the FH Map Window.
http://edina.ac.uk/ is a University of Edinburgh based project offering the Digimap services.
The place names it has digitised appear to be focussed mainly on UK plus country names and major cities elsewhere.
We assume Calico Pie chose Edina Digimap because the commercial licence fees are much lower than say Google Maps and most FH users need mapping in the UK.

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
Klaus,
It must be very frustrating when map doesn't recognise one of your major towns like Odense. (I wonder what Hans Christian would think?)
However, did you know that with the map window open, you can actually drag and drop any place listed in the left hand pane, and drop it onto the correct location? I find it much more convenient than dragging a misplaced marker, or those places that have a ? against them, which prevents you placing a marker altogether!

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
I have just tried the FH Map Window and it geocoded OK for Odense, Denmark and Randers, Denmark and Viborg, Denmark and Horsens, Denmark and Sønderborg, Denmark and Rødovre, Denmark which is quite small.
However, København, Denmark or Aarhus, Denmark did NOT geocode.
Although, strangely, ø, Denmark did geocode to København.
So it is working for many places in Denmark and recognises characters such as ø but obviously not every place.
You can tell when the geocoding has worked because in the Map Window the tick box to the left of the name in Part 1 column is white, whereas if only the country Denmark is geocoded the box is pink.

Re: Map window not working for Denmark?
The new geocoder in FH V6.2.5 now correctly maps København, Denmark and Aarhus, Denmark and many other places in Denmark.
