Report with timeline

I would like to be able to produce a report that shows a timeline of events that affect an individual including all comments? I cant find such a possibility. I know that i can make it as query but i was nor able to to get the comments included.

Is it possible to make a custom report that include a time line? I would like to have included in the Individual summary report - but was not able to find how to - if possible?

Kind Regards

I need a clearer definition of what you mean by "timeline of events that affect an individual".
By timeline I guess you mean in chronological order.
But which events affect an individual?
Do you want just BMD Events of close relatives, or all facts of close relatives.
Who do you include as close relatives?
Just children and parents, or also grandchildren, siblings, uncles & aunts, cousins, grandparents, etc...

By comments do you mean Notes, and if so which ones?
Note field for each Event?
Note field for whole Individual?

It would help if you could provide details of the Query perhaps by attaching the script to this thread.
Use File > Import/Export > Export > Query to produce the script file.
Use the Attachments tab below the Post a reply text box to add the file.

Hi Tatewise

Se attached timeline - taken from the Facts tab. I would like to make a report with such a timeline and with the notes also. Like:

13 February 1869
Birth of daughter Karen
Place: Voel sogn Gjern herred Skanderborg Amt
Note: bbbbbbbbb

15 Marts 1870
Birth of ........
Place:..........
Note:.................

Et cet.

The format with bullets a in the attached file would be fine, if the notes also was included. As now You have to mark the line to see the text in the note.

I hope that it explains what I wish for ;-)

Kind regards

Unfortunately, there are not any existing standard Reports that can do that.

See Wish List Ref 55 Individual and Family Facts Merged Timeline with a date for sorting facts and Vote for it.

I think Narrative Reports can include all those details, but not in a tabulated format.
(Unless you spend the time to alter the Sentence Templates of every fact in a new Fact Set so that the standard Sentence Templates are still available. I might investigate that technique myself.)
[EDIT: Sorry, I am wrong. Timeline Events are NOT included in Narrative Reports.]

There are some fhugdownloads:queriesfact|> Downloads and Links ~ Query Type: Fact for Timelines.
You will need to alter the Columns to include fact Notes and perhaps adjust others.
It would also be possible to filter out non-BMD Events from the relative's facts.

Thanks - I had searched the Knowledge Base, without finding a useful answer and suspected that there were no easy solutions.

I have cast my vote ;)

This may not be a very elegant approach, but you could enlarge the Facts tab window in the Property Box and then use the Windows Snipping Tool to take a picture of that window. Save the snipped picture as a jpeg file and then attach it as a Source document to a custom Biography (or Timeline) attribute for that individual.

Using that technique it is even possible to customise what is shown in the Facts tab bullet listing including Note text.
Are you interested in that approach?

Hi Bob and Mike

Thanks. It is absolutely a solution, but not practical one as You would have to make and edit a new report each time You want to make a timeline for a person.

I had hoped for a standard report or a custom report (that could be reused) each time I needed a report for an individual with the timeline included.

It was meant as a tool for me when I was searching in church records for new information.

I will use the snipping tool and Word. (I was somewhat surprised that the built-in copy function only works for individual facts!)

Thanks for the help

Kind regards

You have not commented on the fhugdownloads:queriesfact|> Downloads and Links ~ Query Type: Fact Timeline queries that can be printed as a report.

Now you have explained the purpose, there may also be other solutions.

1) Are you looking at those church records online at the same PC that runs FH?
Have you tried the Quick Family Facts Plugin?

2) Are you going to visit an archive somewhere else where you cannot take your PC?
Have you tried the Family Group Sheet.
Have you tried the Outline Reports with Report > Options > Main > Layout Events and Attributes - on separate lines.
They do not produce a single Timeline, but do include all the family details you need.
Have you considered exporting the FH Project to an Android tablet or iPad that you can take with you?

"You have not commented on the Knowledge Base > Downloads and Links ~ Query Type: Fact Timeline queries that can be printed as a report."

Yes and no - see first post.

I have tried it - and It was no better than using the snipping tool (see below) - but I am not very well versed i queries ;) - so prhaps It can be refined?

That is just the Standard Query called Individual Timeline.

See also the fhugdownloads:queriesfact|> Downloads and Links ~ Query Type: Fact Timeline queries.

I have attached a custom version of that standard query that includes the Place and Notes you wanted.
Other refinements are possible.
It should print on one page in landscape, and more will fit with smaller fonts.

But if the Query results are copied to a spreadsheet or a word-processor table, the relevant cells can be formatted to text-wrap their contents.

Yes that's true PeterR, and easy to do, thanks for reminding me.

BUT only if the Note text is no longer than about 150 characters, whereupon it gets truncated.

See how_to:display_long_text_like_notes|> Display long text such as Notes.

Your own Quick Family Facts Plugin as You suggested earlier :D

Unfortunately, at present, I don't think it is possible to add a Print function to such Plugins, but will give it some thought.

In the meantime, use the fhugdownloads:contents:utility_windows_snipping_tool|> Utility ~ Windows Snipping Tool to snip the Plugin display panel and print that directly using the Snipping Tool's own File > Print command, or use File > Save As an image file.

With the Quick Family Facts Plugin you can also copy the text from each pane and paste it into a word processor or text editor program, and if the program supports it, the Bold and colour formatting is retained. You have to repeat the process for each pane, but in some cases this kind of output may be preferable to an image file.
